The SDA announced the microSD format at CTIA Wireless 2005 on March 14, 2005, and the final microSD details were announced on July 13, 2005. When they were first sold, the microSD format was sold in sizes of 32, 64, and 128 MB. SanDisk made a 4 GB microSD card on July 2006, at first costing $99 (USD). Since then, the prices for flash memory devices have become much lower. At the time of April 2009, the same 4 GB card could be bought for as low as $12 (USD) at department stores, and by May 2009, for as low as $6 (USD) at online electronics stores. In January 2010, a 16 GB micro SD card class 2 cost about $40 (USD), and a 4 GB class 2 micro SD card about $8 (USD).
Under Unix-like operating systems such as Linux or FreeBSD, SD cards can be formatted using the UFS, Ext2, Ext3, Ext4, btrfs, HFS Plus, ReiserFS or F2FS file system. Additionally under Linux, HFS Plus file systems may be accessed for read/write if the “hfsplus” package is installed, and partitioned and formatted if “hfsprogs” is installed. (These package names are correct under Debian, Ubuntu etc., but may differ on other Linux distributions.)
The GameCube introduced a proprietary miniDVD optical disc format as the storage medium for the console, capable of storing up to 1.5 GB of data. The technology was designed by Matsushita Electric Industrial (now Panasonic Corporation) which utilizes a proprietary copy-protection scheme – different from the Content Scramble System (CSS) found in standard DVDs – to prevent unauthorized reproduction. The Famicom Data Recorder, Famicom Disk System, SNES-CD, and 64DD had explored various complementary storage technologies, but the GameCube was Nintendo’s first console to move away from cartridge-based media altogether. The GameCube’s 1.5 GB mini-disc have sufficient room for most games, although a few games require an extra disc, higher video compression, or removal of content present in versions on other consoles. By comparison, the PlayStation 2 and Xbox, also sixth-generation consoles, both use 8.5 GB Dual-Layer DVDs.
Because of the series connection and removal of wordline contacts, a large grid of NAND flash memory cells will occupy perhaps only 60% of the area of equivalent NOR cells (assuming the same CMOS process resolution, for example, 130 nm, 90 nm, or 65 nm). NAND flash’s designers realized that the area of a NAND chip, and thus the cost, could be further reduced by removing the external address and data bus circuitry. Instead, external devices could communicate with NAND flash via sequential-accessed command and data registers, which would internally retrieve and output the necessary data. This design choice made random-access of NAND flash memory impossible, but the goal of NAND flash was to replace mechanical hard disks, not to replace ROMs.
On March 6, 2009, Pretec introduced the first SDXC card, a 32 GB card with a read/write speed of 400 Mbit/s. But only early in 2010 did compatible host devices come onto the market, including Sony’s Handycam HDR-CX55V camcorder, Canon’s EOS 550D (also known as Rebel T2i) Digital SLR camera, a USB card reader from Panasonic, and an integrated SDXC card reader from JMicron. The earliest laptops to integrate SDXC card readers relied on a USB 2.0 bus, which does not have the bandwidth to support SDXC at full speed.
A final thing to think about is class rating. These numbers from 1 to 10 describe how fast data can be written to the card. Again, if your camera produces large image files or you shoot in RAW format, you’ll need a faster class 10 card to keep up, especially if you like to snap pictures in rapid succession. NAND was developed by Toshiba a year after NOR was produced. It is faster, has a lower cost per bit, requires less chip area per cell and has added resilience. The shelf life of a NAND gate is approximately 100,000 write/erase cycles. In NOR gate flash every cell has an end connected to a bit line and the other end connected to a ground. If a word line is “high” then the transistor proceeds to lower the output bit line.
NAND flash architecture was introduced by Toshiba in 1989. These memories are accessed much like block devices, such as hard disks. Each block consists of a number of pages. The pages are typically 512 or 2,048 or 4,096 bytes in size. Associated with each page are a few bytes (typically 1/32 of the data size) that can be used for storage of an error correcting code (ECC) checksum.

I’d be more than happy with the Aukey reader if it was didn’t have the card reading failure. I don’t care about blocking nearby ports, I don’t care about CF support, I don’t care about absolute top speed, I care about having a very small reader for my daily gear kit. And how could the Hyperdrive be blocking “the only other port” when you can simply turn it 180 degrees?

The Kingston had read and write speeds of 186 MB/s and 172 MB/s, respectively, during our SD card test—it’s slower than Verbatim’s USB-C reader, but it had the most consistent performance of the USB-A readers we tested. In our microSD card test, the Kingston had expected read and write speeds of 90 MB/s and 68 MB/s. It was a little slower than our other picks when reading and writing to a CF card, with speeds of 144 MB/s and 136 MB/s, respectively.
You’ll find an indication of a memory card’s read or write speed from the various cryptic markings on it. But before you get out your school algebra book and attempt some mathematical calculations, remember read speed is faster than write speed.
It gets two stars because it can save/load so it does work…but my Wii has a very difficult time recognizing the card and I have to pull it out of the slot and insert it back several times for it to read. For how often I am going to use it this is okay. It is frustrating and not what I want to do but it will work.

However, when I look at “This PC” (I am on Windows 10) via File Explorer, I still cannot see anything that looks like an SD drive listed…. I’m back to square one. This article seems leaned towards USB-C which I feel remains a newer standard that most computer owners don’t have or need yet. Mac and PC’s are so powerful these days that there is less incentive to upgrade to newer models, especially as Apple annoyingly continues to get rid of all ports. There should be more options for the “traditional” USB ports section. For example, @99EE:disqus and @kinnonyee:disqus have pointed out that Lexar Professional Workflow SR2 was not included in the review, although it has rave reviews on Amazon and B&H.

One more recent application for flash memory is as a replacement for hard disks. Flash memory does not have the mechanical limitations and latencies of hard drives, so a solid-state drive (SSD) is attractive when considering speed, noise, power consumption, and reliability. Flash drives are gaining traction as mobile device secondary storage devices; they are also used as substitutes for hard drives in high-performance desktop computers and some servers with RAID and SAN architectures.

Connector: Because most new laptops have at least one USB-C port (and some now have only USB-C ports), we focused on USB-C card readers for this review. USB-C is the latest USB standard with a small, reversible connector that has begun to replace the larger, rectangular USB-A standard that you’ve seen on computers for the past 20 years. USB-C indicates the shape of the physical connector, but not necessarily the data transfer speed or power delivery speed—it can support USB 2.0, USB 3.0, USB 3.1 Gen 2, or Thunderbolt 3 speeds. Although it seems redundant, a USB-C card reader needs to have a USB-C physical connector; some card readers listed on Amazon that claim to be USB-C readers are actually USB-A readers with a small USB-C adapter. UHS speed class is designed for SDHC and SDXC memory cards. These cards are a higher speed and utilize a different data bus that doesn’t work in non-UHS compatible devices. You’ll want one of these cards for Full HD recording and for taking continuous high-resolution photos, like burst shot mode used for sports photography. A higher speed UHS card, like a U3 can be used for recording video in 4K.
PC Cards (PCMCIA) were the first commercial memory card formats (type I cards) to come out, but are now mainly used in industrial applications and to connect I/O devices such as modems. Since 1994, a number of memory card formats smaller than the PC Card arrived, the first one was CompactFlash and later SmartMedia and Miniature Card. The desire for smaller cards for cell-phones, PDAs, and compact digital cameras drove a trend that left the previous generation of “compact” cards looking big. In digital cameras SmartMedia and CompactFlash had been very successful[neutrality is disputed]. In 2001, SM alone captured 50% of the digital camera market and CF had captured the professional digital camera market. By 2005 however, SD/MMC had nearly taken over SmartMedia’s spot, though not to the same level and with stiff competition coming from Memory Stick variants, as well CompactFlash. In industrial and embedded fields, even the venerable PC card (PCMCIA) memory cards still manage to maintain a niche, while in mobile phones and PDAs, the memory card has become smaller.
Tracks pick up right where they left off when you start the car up again. Overall, truly excellent functionality, but loses a star were it not for the delicate feel to it and the awkward design that has memory cards jutting out at oblique angles that make me afraid I’m going to damage it or the card[s].
For the first 6 months, things seemed to work fine. Files were copied successfully, no corruption issues occurred. The only interesting thing is that the SD card reader would get very hot to the touch – even when doing nothing! (In comparison, the Transcend USB 3.0 reader does get pretty warm as well, but only when data is actually being transferred.)
