I am using this memory card for saving Gamecube games on my softmodded Wii. I am USB loading the games with Dios-Mios. That being said, I doubt that it is my application that is causing this card to fail because it has a very difficult time recognizing the card even in the Wii data options.

In our SD card test, the Unitek had read and write speeds of 92 MB/s and 85 MB/s respectively, which is about what we expect for our test SD card on a UHS-I connection. I should have suspected the poor quality control by just looking at the cheap grey and red paint job on the card. In hindsight, the heating issues were probably a major warning sign. After 6 months, I plugged in my reader – and it died. Rather, it didn’t respond at all – no lights or anything, even with a SD card inside! I tested it on multiple computers and operating systems to eliminate the possibility of computer issues or driver problems – no issues. If you’re just starting out or just do photography as a part-time hobby then, generally speaking, the most important feature to look for when buying a card is the capacity. Most memory card manufacturers publish tables on their websites to show how many images you can save on the specific card. Different file types, compression and resolution all affect the size of each file, so the number of images you can put on one card from one camera to the next is never the same. I bought this during black friday and I got a huge discount using my rewards points also. I primarlly use it for my Galaxy Note 2. After 2 months, the phone says that the sd card was unexpectedly unmouted. Then my card was not recognized and blank. I could not reformat it in any way since my computer and any other devices can not recognize it. After a successfull fix, 2 days later same thing happen and now I can not get it to work at all. (64 GB and 128 GB) and Lexar (128 GB) began shipping SDXC cards rated at Speed Class 10.[73] Pretec offered cards from 8 GB to 128 GB rated at Speed Class 16.[74]
Cards often have a multiplication factor written on them which usually represents read speed (such as 133x, 200x, 300x, etc). This is called the ‘Commercial x rating’ with 1x being equivalent to the speed of the original CD-ROM of 150 KB/sec. This makes it easy to convert between the two by multiplying or dividing by 150. So, 200x will equate to 1 seconds to read a 29.5MB image file (200 x 150 = 30,000/1016 = 29.528).

PC Cards (PCMCIA) were the first commercial memory card formats (type I cards) to come out, but are now mainly used in industrial applications and to connect I/O devices such as modems. Since 1994, a number of memory card formats smaller than the PC Card arrived, the first one was CompactFlash and later SmartMedia and Miniature Card. The desire for smaller cards for cell-phones, PDAs, and compact digital cameras drove a trend that left the previous generation of “compact” cards looking big. In digital cameras SmartMedia and CompactFlash had been very successful[neutrality is disputed]. In 2001, SM alone captured 50% of the digital camera market and CF had captured the professional digital camera market. By 2005 however, SD/MMC had nearly taken over SmartMedia’s spot, though not to the same level and with stiff competition coming from Memory Stick variants, as well CompactFlash. In industrial and embedded fields, even the venerable PC card (PCMCIA) memory cards still manage to maintain a niche, while in mobile phones and PDAs, the memory card has become smaller.
The companies also formed the SD Association (SDA), a non-profit organization, in January 2000 to promote and create SD Card standards.[3] SDA today has about 1,000 member companies. The SDA uses several trademarked logos owned and licensed by SD-3C to enforce compliance with its specifications and assure users of compatibility.[4]
Professionals should also look at how reliable a card is as you can’t take the risk of losing all your photos. This can be worked out by Mean Time Before Failure (MTBF). SanDisk claims a MTBF of over 1,000,000 hours for its memory cards – that’s almost 115 years before the average card is expected to fail.
The GameCube introduced a proprietary miniDVD optical disc format as the storage medium for the console, capable of storing up to 1.5 GB of data.[37] The technology was designed by Matsushita Electric Industrial (now Panasonic Corporation) which utilizes a proprietary copy-protection scheme – different from the Content Scramble System (CSS) found in standard DVDs – to prevent unauthorized reproduction.[38] The Famicom Data Recorder, Famicom Disk System, SNES-CD, and 64DD had explored various complementary storage technologies, but the GameCube was Nintendo’s first console to move away from cartridge-based media altogether.[39] The GameCube’s 1.5 GB mini-disc have sufficient room for most games, although a few games require an extra disc, higher video compression, or removal of content present in versions on other consoles. In February 2014, SanDisk announced a new microSD card, the MicroSDXC. At the time, the cards held up to 128GB. The specific commands used to lock, unlock, program, or erase NOR memories differ for each manufacturer. To avoid needing unique driver software for every device made, special Common Flash Memory Interface (CFI) commands allow the device to identify itself and its critical operating parameters.
Windows Phone 8 devices use SD cards designed for access only by the phone manufacturer or mobile provider. An SD card inserted into the phone underneath the battery compartment becomes locked “to the phone with an automatically generated key” so that “the SD card cannot be read by another phone, device, or PC”.[45] Symbian devices, however, are some of the few that can perform the necessary low-level format operations on locked SD cards. It is therefore possible to use a device such as the Nokia N8 to reformat the card for subsequent use in other devices.[46]
Integrated Wi-Fi – Several companies produce SD cards with built-in Wi-Fi transceivers supporting static security (WEP 40; 104; and 128, WPA-PSK, and WPA2-PSK). The card lets any digital camera with an SD slot transmit captured images over a wireless network, or store the images on the card’s memory until it is in range of a wireless network. Examples include: Eye-Fi / SanDisk, Transcend Wi-Fi, Toshiba FlashAir, Trek Flucard, PQI Air Card and LZeal ez Share.[52] Some models geotag their pictures.
Due to its relatively simple structure and high demand for higher capacity, NAND flash memory is the most aggressively scaled technology among electronic devices. The heavy competition among the top few manufacturers only adds to the aggressiveness in shrinking the design rule or process technology node.[31] While the expected shrink timeline is a factor of two every three years per original version of Moore’s law, this has recently been accelerated in the case of NAND flash to a factor of two every two years.
CompactFlash (CF) cards offer very high storage capacities and fast processing times. They were first introduced by Sandisk in 1994 and were widely used, but now they are usually only found in the most advanced DSLRs. Last year Canon chose CompactFlash as the recording media for use in its new lineup of professional high definiton (HD) video cameras.
USB flash drives are known as the floppy disks of the 21st century. You can see people walking around with them dangling from key chains, backpacks, and even around their necks. These are more resistant to physical abuse than the media cards used in digital cameras.
Bad block management is a relatively new feature in NOR chips. In older NOR devices not supporting bad block management, the software or device driver controlling the memory chip must correct for blocks that wear out, or the device will cease to work reliably.

These cards are each pre-packed in a certified Frustration Free Packaging (FFP) mailer labelled Amazon/SanDisk (No. 80-56-10641), and then shipped in a bubble wrap envelope which was 11.25″ x 9″. Contemporary reception of the GameCube was generally positive. The console was praised for its controller, extensive software library and high-quality games, but was criticized for its exterior design and lack of features. Nintendo sold 21.74 million GameCube units worldwide before it was discontinued in 2007. Its successor, the Wii, which has backward compatibility with most GameCube software, was released in November 2006.

Although the packaging was different than what was shown in the picture, I got what I expected: A Gamecube memory card. 64 Megabytes is plenty for any persons use. My old cards were missing and most likely broken, and I wanted to re-live some old memories. This card has more than enough space to store some of my old favorites. It gets the job done, and it was cheap, but I have experienced a few problems. Sometimes the Gamecube says that the memory card isn’t placed in Slot A, despite having the memory card securely in Slot A for weeks and not even touching it. This happens rarely, but because I have been playing the Gamecube so much, it is quite annoying when I have to blow inside the card and keep plugging it back into the Gamecube, hitting “Try Again” when it says there’s nothing in Slot A, then eventually turning the system off and on and hoping that it will work. Every time, it will eventually work. I just hope that it will keep working. Anyway, it is what it is. Its a cheap Gamecube Memory Card, and it does its job.

As discussed above, the memory card options available to you are limited by the device you are using it in. Each device has a discrete set of compatible card choices. Check your device carefully, as many cameras have multiple memory card slots, giving you more options of what cards you can use.

A process called Fowler-Nordheim tunneling removes electrons from the floating gate. Either Fowler-Nordheim tunneling or a phenomenon known as channel hot-electron injection traps the electrons in the floating gate.

UHS-II uses an additional row of pins to transfer data faster than UHS-I. Because of that extra row of physical pins, you can use a UHS-II card with a UHS-I camera, and a UHS-I card with a UHS-II camera, but you won’t get UHS-II speeds unless both camera and card support it. Likewise, to get those transfer speeds from your SD card to your computer, both the card and card reader must support it. Only high-end cameras can take advantage of UHS-II SD cards right now, but we expect this to change. In February 2017, the SD Association also introduced UHS-III (PDF) to provide further support for 360-degree, 3D, 4K, and 8K media content, but we expect it will take a year or two before we see memory cards and devices that support the new interface.
Because of the particular characteristics of flash memory, it is best used with either a controller to perform wear leveling and error correction or specifically designed flash file systems, which spread writes over the media and deal with the long erase times of NOR flash blocks.[58] The basic concept behind flash file systems is the following: when the flash store is to be updated, the file system will write a new copy of the changed data to a fresh block, remap the file pointers, then erase the old block later when it has time.

By the time the version 2.0 (SDHC) specification was completed in June 2006,[112] vendors had already devised 2 GB and 4 GB SD cards, either as specified in Version 1.01, or by creatively reading Version 1.00. The resulting cards do not work correctly in some host devices.[113][114]
A final thing to think about is class rating. These numbers from 1 to 10 describe how fast data can be written to the card. Again, if your camera produces large image files or you shoot in RAW format, you’ll need a faster class 10 card to keep up, especially if you like to snap pictures in rapid succession. If you like to shoot Full HD video, you’ll also need one of the faster SD cards.
Flash memory (both NOR and NAND types) was invented by Fujio Masuoka while working for Toshiba circa 1980.[4][5] According to Toshiba, the name “flash” was suggested by Masuoka’s colleague, Shōji Ariizumi, because the erasure process of the memory contents reminded him of the flash of a camera.[6] Masuoka and colleagues presented the invention at the IEEE 1987 International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM) held in San Francisco.[7]

But before you take things into 6th gear; is your camera capable of the fastest speed out there? Probably not. The turbo speeds out there (such as Class 10 cards) are usually aimed at video cameras producing movies which need to write as much data as possible every second. You need to make sure your camera can utilise all the speed your card can deliver, if not it goes to waste and so will your money. Consult your instruction manual or search the manufacturer’s website for the fastest card speed supported.
NAND flash architecture was introduced by Toshiba in 1989.[38] These memories are accessed much like block devices, such as hard disks. Each block consists of a number of pages. The “×” rating, that was used by some card manufacturers and made obsolete by speed classes, is a multiple of the standard CD-ROM drive speed of 150 KiB/s (approximately 1.23 Mbit/s). Basic cards transfer data at up to six times (6×) the CD-ROM speed; that is, 900 KiB/s or 7.37 Mbit/s. The 2.0 specification[clarification needed] defines speeds up to 200×, but is not as specific as Speed Classes are on how to measure speed. Secure Digital includes four card families available in three different sizes. The four families are the original Standard-Capacity (SDSC), the High-Capacity (SDHC), the eXtended-Capacity (SDXC), and the SDIO, which combines input/output functions with data storage.[5][6][7] The three form factors are the original size, the mini size, and the micro size. Electrically passive adapters allow a smaller card to fit and function in a device built for a larger card. The SD card’s small footprint is an ideal storage medium for smaller, thinner and more portable electronic devices.
Speed class is a minimum sustained writing performance speed for SD cards. This means that it’s the speed it can write data to the card consistently. Speed class is mainly useful when you’re shopping for a card to use with video recording, since you’ll be continuously writing to the card. The higher the speed class, the more data you can write to the card in the same amount of time. Pay attention to this when deciding what card you need for the desired resolution you’d like to film in.
With sales sagging and millions of unsold consoles in stock, Nintendo halted GameCube production for the first nine months of 2003 to reduce surplus units.[74] Sales rebounded slightly after a price drop to US$99.99 on September 24, 2003[89] and the release of The Legend of Zelda: Collector’s Edition bundle. I think it’s pretty cool you can use standard SD and Micro SD in it, but I opted to use my 16GB Micro SDHC from my old phone because standard SD sticks WAY out (be sure to insert the Micro SD upside down). The Micro SD still sticks out from the side of the reader about 1/4″, and I’m curious to know why they couldn’t have designed the reader to accept Micro SD from the rear of it so you won’t accidentally tug on it when inserting/removing the reader.

In December 2012, Taiwanese engineers from Macronix revealed their intention to announce at the 2012 IEEE International Electron Devices Meeting that they had figured out how to improve NAND flash storage read/write cycles from 10,000 to 100 million cycles using a “self-healing” process that used a flash chip with “onboard heaters that could anneal small groups of memory cells.”[27] The built-in thermal annealing was to replace the usual erase cycle with a local high temperature process that not only erased the stored charge, but also repaired the electron-induced stress in the chip, giving write cycles of at least 100 million.[28] The result was to be a chip that could be erased and rewritten over and over, even when it should theoretically break down. If you’re just starting out or just do photography as a part-time hobby then, generally speaking, the most important feature to look for when buying a card is the capacity. Most memory card manufacturers publish tables on their websites to show how many images you can save on the specific card. Different file types, compression and resolution all affect the size of each file, so the number of images you can put on one card from one camera to the next is never the same. Between 1GB and 8GB storage should be enough for an average beginner photographer using a compact camera and these won’t break your bank either.

I bought this during black friday and I got a huge discount using my rewards points also. I primarlly use it for my Galaxy Note 2. After 2 months, the phone says that the sd card was unexpectedly unmouted. Then my card was not recognized and blank. I could not reformat it in any way since my computer and any other devices can not recognize it. After a successfull fix, 2 days later same thing happen and now I can not get it to work at all. I do not know who to get a hold on to get this fixed. But it is a bummer since I it is a nice size and value. But it just failed horribly.

While EPROMs had to be completely erased before being rewritten, NAND-type flash memory may be written and read in blocks (or pages) which are generally much smaller than the entire device. EPROM and EEPROM cells operate similarly to flash memory in how data is written, or programmed, but differ from flash memory in how data is erased. Samsung Galaxy Note II owner – card worked great out of the package without any need for formatting in my phone. Just after the 30-day return period had expired, I’ve started noticing the Reading SD Card icon briefly appearing when I wake my phone from sleep. Now, I’m constantly getting read errors on my phone asking me to format my card. After formatting on my computer (tried FAT32 and FAT – on my computer because it does not format on my phone with this error) and then again on my phone (to ensure a correct format), it would briefly work for about an hour and then the reading errors would recur. It’s just a matter of time before complete and utter card failure. The card is a complete failure now with the constant read errors. It simply is not usable. Bought this card on sale (not much of a savings now that I have a useless chunk of plastic). Thought I’d risk it even though SanDisk’s quality has been on the decline, but never again. Who would have thought that SanDisk, once a leader in flash memory, would have fallen so low. I’ve never had any of my Patriot cards fail as miserably as this SanDisk card. I should have suspected the poor quality control by just looking at the cheap grey and red paint job on the card. I highly recommend anyone thinking about buying this card to learn from my mistake and reconsider spending a little more to buy from a quality company.

I have had the same problem with my Dell XPS L502x but the SD card reader will read the slow cards 4gb but when I put a 32 GB xtream it will not read so I have to use a USB card reader , I also have trouble now with the integrated web-cam this will not work through the Windows applications but have done a test online and it works, I have tried bios upgrades and there are no updates on the drives so like we all have been left high and dry !! 
We were really surprised with this little USB SD/Micro SD/MMC reader. The speed class rating was based on request from movie and video companies, as video recording in different formats and resolutions requires certain write speeds when recording to the card. I’ve long been a fan of Sandisk, and have faithfully used their compact flash memory cards in all my digital cameras, so imagine my surprise to have two 16 GB and two 32 GB cards fail in two different Samsung Galaxy SIII phones so far, taking all data with them. The cards cannot be accessed or formatted, either in the phone or on the computer. I’ve finally contacted Sandisk support, but after reading a lot of review on the web concerning this issue (and trying all the various workarounds posted), I’m not confident that Sandisk will be able to help me. There frankly should be NO WAY for an SD interface to make a card unusable, short of physically destroying it with overvoltage, period. I’m an embedded systems engineer (30+ years experience) and there is NO EXCUSE for Sandisk cards failing like this, unless the phone is doing something evil electrically to them. Please beware, and back up your files often, because it WILL FAIL eventually.
A fairer and more recent system is the ‘class rating’. The SD Association created the speed class rating test which focuses on finding the absolute minimum data transfer rate of SD/SDHC/SDXC cards, as opposed to a sustainable rate.
