At its outset the Association represented just 14 member companies and has grown into a global alliance comprised of around 1,000 member companies. By developing and adopting SD standards, members enjoy better compatibility of member cards between devices, greatly enhancing consumer enjoyment and convenience.
There are 2 options I am aware of: use the Win 10 option to back out the upgrade and go back to the last OS, or buy a new external card reader that plugs into a USB port [and live without the built-in card slot]. The Insignia NS-DCR30A2 USB 3.0 Multiformat Memory Card Reader I bought at Best Buy also works with USB 2 and reads my cards up to and including the 64GB SDXC. (An older external reader I had would not handle the 32 and 64GB cards.)
When an SD is inserted, the driver appears in the device manager and a drive letter is assigned. An update request indicates the driver is up-to-date. Uninstalling and reinstalling the driver does not help. There were popups asking to reformat the card, but don’t do it because the card is not the problem. Win 7 read all my cards just fine, and Win 10 does not.

The miniSD form was introduced at March 2003 CeBIT by SanDisk Corporation which announced and demonstrated it. The SDA adopted the miniSD card in 2003 as a small form factor extension to the SD card standard. While the new cards were designed especially for mobile phones, they are usually packaged with a miniSD adapter that provides compatibility with a standard SD memory card slot.
The GameCube is the first Nintendo console to use optical discs as its primary storage medium. The discs are similar to the miniDVD format; as a result of their smaller size and the console’s small disc compartment, the system was not designed to play standard DVDs or audio CDs. The console supports online gaming for a small number of games via the broadband or modem adapter and connects to the Game Boy Advance via the link cable, allowing players to access exclusive in-game features using the handheld as a second screen and controller.
Howard Cheng, technical director of Nintendo technology development, said the company’s goal was to select a “simple RISC architecture” to help speed development of games by making it easier on software developers. IGN reported that the system was “designed from the get-go to attract third-party developers by offering more power at a cheaper price. Nintendo’s design doc for the console specifies that cost is of utmost importance, followed by space.” Hardware partner ArtX’s Vice President Greg Buchner stated that their guiding thought on the console’s hardware design was to target the developers rather than the players, and to “look into a crystal ball” and discern “what’s going to allow the Miyamoto-sans of the world to develop the best games”.
I am using this memory card for saving Gamecube games on my softmodded Wii. I am USB loading the games with Dios-Mios. That being said, I doubt that it is my application that is causing this card to fail because it has a very difficult time recognizing the card even in the Wii data options.
Flash memory architecture includes a memory array stacked with a large number of flash cells. A basic flash memory cell consists of a storage transistor with a control gate and a floating gate, which is insulated from the rest of the transistor by a thin dielectric material or oxide layer. The floating gate stores the electrical charge and controls the flow of the electrical current.
To erase a NOR flash cell (resetting it to the “1” state), a large voltage of the opposite polarity is applied between the CG and source terminal, pulling the electrons off the FG through quantum tunneling. Modern NOR flash memory chips are divided into erase segments (often called blocks or sectors). The erase operation can be performed only on a block-wise basis; all the cells in an erase segment must be erased together. Programming of NOR cells, however, generally can be performed one byte or word at a time.

A big bright blue indicator light makes life easier, lighting up when connected to your computer and flashing when accessed. We used it on a laptop with Windows 7 to access a 1 Gb micro SD card that…. wait for it…. had been horribly and evilly, and quite accidentally drowned in the washing machine (Mr. Mr. doesn’t know how to check his pants pockets when I’m screaming ‘Hurry up already!’… obviously all his fault!), and it worked flawlessly with the tiny drowned card! After researching nearly 50 USB-C SD readers, we tested 12 models that met our requirements in December 2016 and three new models in July 2017. We also looked for models with promising user reviews, although the category is so new that many of the ones we tested don’t have any yet. Then we plugged them into a MacBook Pro (13-inch, late 2016, Two Thunderbolt 3 Ports) and a 2016 Dell XPS 13 (we used a 2017 Dell XPS 15 for our most recent tests) and used AJA System Test and CrystalDiskMark to test their speeds with a SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-II SD card, a SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-II microSD card, and a SanDisk Extreme Pro CompactFlash Card. The test results presented here are from our tests on a Windows laptop; our Mac tests were identical, except where noted.
Consumer flash storage devices typically are advertised with usable sizes expressed as a small integer power of two (2, 4, 8, etc.) and a designation of megabytes (MB) or gigabytes (GB); e.g., 512 MB, 8 GB. This includes SSDs marketed as hard drive replacements, in accordance with traditional hard drives, which use decimal prefixes. Thus, an SSD marked as “64 GB” is at least 64 × 10003 bytes (64 GB). Most users will have slightly less capacity than this available for their files, due to the space taken by file system metadata.
mSATA flash drives mainly used in laptops, netbooks and other portable computing devices. The mSATA specification maps SATA signals to an internally mounted PCIe card in a computer motherboard. The M.2 SSD form factor for ultrathin computing devices is generally considered to be the eventual replacement for mSATA-based flash memory cards.
Professionals should also look at how reliable a card is as you can’t take the risk of losing all your photos. This can be worked out by Mean Time Before Failure (MTBF). SanDisk claims a MTBF of over 1,000,000 hours for its memory cards – that’s almost 115 years before the average card is expected to fail.
In flash memory, each memory cell resembles a standard MOSFET, except that the transistor has two gates instead of one. On top is the control gate (CG), as in other MOS transistors, but below this there is a floating gate (FG) insulated all around by an oxide layer. The FG is interposed between the CG and the MOSFET channel. Because the FG is electrically isolated by its insulating layer, electrons placed on it are trapped until they are removed by another application of electric field (e.g. Applied voltage or UV as in EPROM). Counter-intuitively, placing electrons on the FG sets the transistor to the logical “0” state. Once the FG is charged, the electrons in it screen (partially cancel) the electric field from the CG, thus, increasing the threshold voltage (VT1) of the cell. This means that now a higher voltage (VT2) must be applied to the CG to make the channel conductive. In order to read a value from the transistor, an intermediate voltage between the threshold voltages (VT1 & VT2) is applied to the CG. If the channel conducts at this intermediate voltage, the FG must be uncharged (if it was charged, we would not get conduction because the intermediate voltage is less than VT2), and hence, a logical “1” is stored in the gate. If the channel does not conduct at the intermediate voltage, it indicates that the FG is charged, and hence, a logical “0” is stored in the gate. The presence of a logical “0” or “1” is sensed by determining whether there is current flowing through the transistor when the intermediate voltage is asserted on the CG. In a multi-level cell device, which stores more than one bit per cell, the amount of current flow is sensed (rather than simply its presence or absence), in order to determine more precisely the level of charge on the FG.
On March 6, 2009, Pretec introduced the first SDXC card, a 32 GB card with a read/write speed of 400 Mbit/s. But only early in 2010 did compatible host devices come onto the market, including Sony’s Handycam HDR-CX55V camcorder, Canon’s EOS 550D (also known as Rebel T2i) Digital SLR camera, a USB card reader from Panasonic, and an integrated SDXC card reader from JMicron. The earliest laptops to integrate SDXC card readers relied on a USB 2.0 bus, which does not have the bandwidth to support SDXC at full speed.
Nintendo learned from its experiences – both positive and negative – with the Nintendo 64’s three-handled controller design and went with a two-handled, “handlebar” design for the GameCube. The shape was made popular by Sony’s PlayStation controller released in 1994 and its follow-up DualShock series of gamepads introduced in 1997. In addition to vibration feedback, the DualShock series was well known for having two analog sticks to improve the 3D experience in games. Nintendo and Microsoft designed similar features in the controllers for their sixth-generation consoles, but instead of having the analog sticks parallel to each other, they chose to stagger them by swapping the positions of the directional pad (d-pad) and left analog stick. The GameCube controller features a total of eight buttons, two analog sticks, a d-pad, and an internal rumble motor. The primary analog stick is on the left with the d-pad located below and closer to the center. On the right are four buttons: a large, green “A” button in the center, a smaller red “B” button to the left, an “X” button to the right, and a “Y” button at the top. Below and to the inside is a yellow “C” analog stick, which often serves a variety of in-game functions, such as controlling the camera angle. The Start/Pause button is located in the middle, and the rumble motor is encased within the center of the controller.
MiniSD cards, the least frequently used format these days, measure 21.5 by 20 by 1.4 mm (HWD) and weigh just a gram, making them just over a third the volume and taking up just over half the area of a full-size SD card. Instead of cut corners, miniSD cards have a tapered corner to help you orient the card when putting it in a slot. This design aspect follows with the smallest of the SD cards, the microSD card.
An SD Card (Secure Digital Card) is an ultra small flash memory card designed to provide high-capacity memory in a small size. SD cards are used in many small portable devices such as digital video camcorders, digital cameras, handheld computers, audio players and mobile phones. In use since 1999, SD Memory Cards are now available in capacities between 16 Megabytes and 1 Gigabyte. An SD card typically measures 32 x 24 x 2.1 mm and weighs approximately 2grams.
At this time, all the leading digital camera manufacturers used SD in their consumer product lines, including Canon, Casio, Fujifilm, Kodak, Leica, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax, Ricoh, Samsung, and Sony. Formerly, Olympus and Fujifilm used XD-Picture Cards (xD cards) exclusively, while Sony only used Memory Stick; by early 2010 all three supported SD.
Nintendo is traditionally recognized for releasing innovative, first-party games, most notably from the Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda series. These first-party series continued on the GameCube and bolstered the console’s popularity. As a publisher, Nintendo also focused on creating new franchises, such as Pikmin and Animal Crossing, and renewing some that skipped the N64 platform, most notably the Metroid series with the release of Metroid Prime. The console also saw success with the critically acclaimed The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Super Mario Sunshine, and its best-selling game, Super Smash Bros. Melee, which sold 7 million copies worldwide. Despite Nintendo’s commitment to its software library, however, it was still criticized by some for not featuring enough games during the console’s launch window.
A process called Fowler-Nordheim tunneling removes electrons from the floating gate. Either Fowler-Nordheim tunneling or a phenomenon known as channel hot-electron injection traps the electrons in the floating gate.

The SDA announced the microSD format at CTIA Wireless 2005 on March 14, 2005, and the final microSD details were announced on July 13, 2005. When they were first sold, the microSD format was sold in sizes of 32, 64, and 128 MB. SanDisk made a 4 GB microSD card on July 2006, at first costing $99 (USD). Since then, the prices for flash memory devices have become much lower. At the time of April 2009, the same 4 GB card could be bought for as low as $12 (USD) at department stores, and by May 2009, for as low as $6 (USD) at online electronics stores. In January 2010, a 16 GB micro SD card class 2 cost about $40 (USD), and a 4 GB class 2 micro SD card about $8 (USD).
In December 2012, Taiwanese engineers from Macronix revealed their intention to announce at the 2012 IEEE International Electron Devices Meeting that they had figured out how to improve NAND flash storage read/write cycles from 10,000 to 100 million cycles using a “self-healing” process that used a flash chip with “onboard heaters that could anneal small groups of memory cells.” The built-in thermal annealing was to replace the usual erase cycle with a local high temperature process that not only erased the stored charge, but also repaired the electron-induced stress in the chip, giving write cycles of at least 100 million. The result was to be a chip that could be erased and rewritten over and over, even when it should theoretically break down. As promising as Macronix’s breakthrough might have been for the mobile industry, however, there were no plans for a commercial product to be released any time in the near future.
