Anecdotal evidence suggests NAND flash drives are not wearing out to the degree once feared. Flash drive manufacturers have improved endurance and reliability through error correction code algorithms, wear leveling and other technologies.

Flash memory architecture includes a memory array stacked with a large number of flash cells. A basic flash memory cell consists of a storage transistor with a control gate and a floating gate, which is insulated from the rest of the transistor by a thin dielectric material or oxide layer. The floating gate stores the electrical charge and controls the flow of the electrical current. 
Although many personal computers accommodate SD cards as an auxiliary storage device using a built-in slot, or can accommodate SD cards by means of a USB adapter, SD cards cannot be used as the primary hard disk through the onboard ATA controller, because none of the SD card variants support ATA signalling. Primary hard disk use requires a separate SD controller chip[96] or an SD-to-CompactFlash converter. However, on computers that support bootstrapping from a USB interface, an SD card in a USB adapter can be the primary hard disk, provided it contains an operating system that supports USB access once the bootstrap is complete.
You’ll need a memory card reader to transfer photos to your computer if you don’t fancy lugging around a USB cable for every one of your devices. You’ll be able to get a card reader for each of the above types of memory cards and some come with built in memory and can also function as a USB flash drive. But check the device you’re loading your photos to as some computers, printers and notebooks already come with built-in memory card slots. If you’re using more than one memory card regularly it will probably be worth investing in a multi-card reader, which accept multiple types of memory cards and brands. Some even take as many as 35-in-1.
It gets two stars because it can save/load so it does work…but my Wii has a very difficult time recognizing the card and I have to pull it out of the slot and insert it back several times for it to read. For how often I am going to use it this is okay. It is frustrating and not what I want to do but it will work.

Dave, thanks.  There wasn’t an item as you suggested under “disk drives” – but after rebooting the notebook with the SD Card inserted,  I can now see an SD Host Adaptor (“SDA Standard Compliant SD Host Controller”). 
Once you know what formats you can pick from, you’ll want to think about what you’ll be using your device to do. Different tasks require varying amounts of card capacity and write speed (both explained below):

SDHC cards are physically and electrically identical to standard-capacity SD cards (SDSC). The major compatibility issues between SDHC and SDSC cards are the redefinition of the Card-Specific Data (CSD) register in version 2.0 (see below), and the fact that SDHC cards are shipped preformatted with the FAT32 file system.
Most NAND devices are shipped from the factory with some bad blocks. These are typically marked according to a specified bad block marking strategy. By allowing some bad blocks, the manufacturers achieve far higher yields than would be possible if all blocks had to be verified good. This significantly reduces NAND flash costs and only slightly decreases the storage capacity of the parts.
There are 2 options I am aware of: use the Win 10 option to back out the upgrade and go back to the last OS, or buy a new external card reader that plugs into a USB port [and live without the built-in card slot]. The Insignia NS-DCR30A2 USB 3.0 Multiformat Memory Card Reader I bought at Best Buy also works with USB 2 and reads my cards up to and including the 64GB SDXC. (An older external reader I had would not handle the 32 and 64GB cards.)
The standard SD card is the largest and has been in use the longest, measuring 32 by 24 by 2.1 mm (HWD), weighing 2 grams, and showing the signature cut-corner profile SD cards are known for. Most digital cameras you can buy today use standard-size SD cards. Even though they’re the largest SD card, they’re still very small, and are dwarfed by the CompactFlash cards used by professional photographers in high-end digital cameras, like the $5,000 Canon 1D Mark IV. However, the cards can get even smaller.
I’ve long been a fan of Sandisk, and have faithfully used their compact flash memory cards in all my digital cameras, so imagine my surprise to have two 16 GB and two 32 GB cards fail in two different Samsung Galaxy SIII phones so far, taking all data with them. The cards cannot be accessed or formatted, either in the phone or on the computer. I’ve finally contacted Sandisk support, but after reading a lot of review on the web concerning this issue (and trying all the various workarounds posted), I’m not confident that Sandisk will be able to help me. There frankly should be NO WAY for an SD interface to make a card unusable, short of physically destroying it with overvoltage, period. I’m an embedded systems engineer (30+ years experience) and there is NO EXCUSE for Sandisk cards failing like this, unless the phone is doing something evil electrically to them. Please beware, and back up your files often, because it WILL FAIL eventually.

Speaking more generally, CompactFlash (CF) cards on the market can have a speed rating of 150MB/sec (1000x) and will work for a large variety of cameras, while most standard SDHC cards currently tend to be around 20-30MB/sec (133-200x). While there are also a few super-fast UHS-II U3 SDHC cards available now with potential write speeds of 250MB/s, these are also not as widely available for use in all cameras and do start to get rather pricey.
The flash memory chips inside them are sized in strict binary multiples, but the actual total capacity of the chips is not usable at the drive interface. It is considerably larger than the advertised capacity in order to allow for distribution of writes (wear leveling), for sparing, for error correction codes, and for other metadata needed by the device’s internal firmware.
In most cases, once the Micro SD Card is inserted in your phone, your phone automatically starts scanning the card, pulls out all the information MicroSD Card  needs, and immediately stores information in the appropriate location. So that Micro SD Card will start working directly.
Nintendo learned from its experiences – both positive and negative – with the Nintendo 64’s three-handled controller design and went with a two-handled, “handlebar” design for the GameCube. Prior to the Nintendo GameCube’s release, Nintendo focused resources on the launch of the Game Boy Advance, a handheld game console and successor to the original Game Boy and Game Boy Color. As a result, several games originally destined for the Nintendo 64 console were postponed in favor of becoming early releases on the GameCube. The last first-party game in 2001 for the Nintendo 64 was released in May, a month before the Game Boy Advance’s launch and six months before the GameCube’s, emphasizing the company’s shift in resources. Concurrently, Nintendo was developing software for the GameCube which would provision future connectivity between it and the Game Boy Advance. The newer families of SD card improve card speed by increasing the bus rate (the frequency of the clock signal that strobes information into and out of the card). Whatever the bus rate, the card can signal to the host that it is “busy” until a read or a write operation is complete. Compliance with a higher speed rating is a guarantee that the card limits its use of the “busy” indication.
