MultiMediaCard: Developed in 1997 by SanDisk and Siemens, MMCs were originally designed to use NAND flash memory technology from Toshiba. However, MMCs are less common with the arrival of SD card technology. Most computer hardware vendors no longer provide ports for inserting an MMC device. A new development is embedded MMC, or eMMC, in which the flash card is integrated on the computer motherboard along with controller software to use the eMMC as a bootable system drive. MMCs weigh approximately two grams.
On the top of the controller are two “pressure-sensitive” trigger buttons marked “L” and “R”. Each essentially provides two functions: one analog and one digital. As the trigger is depressed, it emits an analog signal which increases the more it is pressed in. Once fully depressed, the trigger “clicks” registering a digital signal that can be used for a separate function within a game. There is also a purple, digital button on the right side marked “Z”.[52]
A joint development at Intel and Micron will allow the production of 32-layer 3.5 terabyte (TB) NAND flash sticks and 10 TB standard-sized SSDs. The device includes 5 packages of 16 × 48 GB TLC dies, using a floating gate cell design.[66]
With the GameCube, Nintendo aimed to reverse the trend as evidenced by the number of third-party games available at launch – the N64 had none. The new optical disc format introduced with the GameCube increased the capacity significantly and reduced production costs. For the most part, the strategy worked. High-profile exclusives such as Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader from Factor 5, Resident Evil 4 from Capcom, and Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes from Konami were very successful. Sega, which focused on third-party development following the demise of its Dreamcast console, offered a vast amount of support for the GameCube porting old favorites over such as Crazy Taxi and Sonic Adventure 2. The company also started new franchises on the GameCube including Super Monkey Ball. Several third-party developers were contracted to work on new games for existing Nintendo franchises, including Star Fox Assault by Namco and Wario World from Treasure.[59][61]
The microSD card has helped propel the smartphone market by giving both manufacturers and consumers greater flexibility and freedom.[according to whom?] Due to their compact size, microSD cards are used in many[which?] different applications in a large variety[which?] of markets. Action cameras, such as the GoPRO’s Hero and cameras in drones, frequently use microSD cards.[citation needed]
In 2008, the SDA specified Embedded SD, “leverag[ing] well-known SD standards” to enable non-removable SD-style devices on printed circuit boards.[98] However this standard was not adopted by the market while the MMC standard became the de facto standard for embedded systems. SanDisk provides such embedded memory components under the iNAND brand.[99]
Video Speed Class is defined to answer a demand for high resolution and high quality 4K8K video recording and it also has an important feature to support next generation flash memory such as 3D NAND. Furthermore, as it covers speed of HD(2K) video, it is possible to integrate into Video Speed Class from now on.

The nonvolatile memory express (NVMe) protocol is a specification that permits an SSD to exploit the PCIe bus. NVMe operates at the host controller to define the command set and feature set needed to streamline the I/O stack. The aim is to enable PCIe-based SSDs to deliver low latency, higher throughput, and to consume less power when compared to SAS or SATA SSDs.
If your smartphone, tablet or entry-level point-and-shoot camera has a memory card slot, you may opt to add a memory card to store your photos, videos, and other data like apps or music. In these cases, you will be more concerned about the card’s storage capacity than its speed. Though they are small, microSD cards can offer large capacities of 128GB and more. Whichever size card you’re interested in, you’ll want to make sure before you buy that your device will support that capacity.
Some prosumer and professional digital cameras continued to offer CompactFlash (CF), either on a second card slot or as the only storage, as CF supports much higher maximum capacities and historically was cheaper for the same capacity.

This article seems leaned towards USB-C which I feel remains a newer standard that most computer owners don’t have or need yet. Mac and PC’s are so powerful these days that there is less incentive to upgrade to newer models, especially as Apple annoyingly continues to get rid of all ports. There should be more options for the “traditional” USB ports section. For example, @99EE:disqus and @kinnonyee:disqus have pointed out that Lexar Professional Workflow SR2 was not included in the review, although it has rave reviews on Amazon and B&H.
If the SD card is integrated, the drivers for it will be amongst the motherboard drivers. Have you tried looking at the motherboard manufacturers website? Often times that driver will be bundled with other drivers.

In December 2012, Taiwanese engineers from Macronix revealed their intention to announce at the 2012 IEEE International Electron Devices Meeting that they had figured out how to improve NAND flash storage read/write cycles from 10,000 to 100 million cycles using a “self-healing” process that used a flash chip with “onboard heaters that could anneal small groups of memory cells.”[27] The built-in thermal annealing was to replace the usual erase cycle with a local high temperature process that not only erased the stored charge, but also repaired the electron-induced stress in the chip, giving write cycles of at least 100 million.[28] The result was to be a chip that could be erased and rewritten over and over, even when it should theoretically break down. As promising as Macronix’s breakthrough might have been for the mobile industry, however, there were no plans for a commercial product to be released any time in the near future.[29]
Kingston Card Readers quickly transfer all your data – photos, videos, music etc.– so you can wait less and do more. They support a wide variety of formats, including microSD, microSDHC, SD, SDHC, SDXC and CompactFlash.
Hope in the future that Amazon punishes vendors who ship inferior, counterfeit, or products different than described or pictured. Right now, the only way I see to determine if this might be the case is to S L O W L Y read the 1 and 2 Star reviews for a product. Four or maybe even two years ago, you could comfortably make a purchase based on 4-Stars or above. No more – especially on these commodity products where confusion exists regarding product specifications. [On this product alone: SD vs. SDXC vs. SDHC; Suitability of Capacity; Choice of writing speed for application. For in-depth information see SDCard dot ORG] An overall rating is NO LONGER a sufficient criterion for a purchasing decision since many of these commodity type products have their reviews gamed by paid reviewers.
The fastest memory card seems to chance from week to week and several companies claim they have the “fastest”, but UDMA (Ultra Direct Memory Access) Cfast 2.0 cards are the current front runners – with speeds of over 500MB/sec. However, these are really yet to be available for more than a narrow selection of cameras and remain highly expensive.

To play online, players must install an official broadband or modem adapter in their system since the GameCube does not have out of the box network capabilities. Nintendo never commissioned any servers or internet services to interface with the console, but allowed other publishers to do so and made them responsible for managing the online experiences for their games.[69]
The main disadvantages of flash memory are the wear-out mechanism and cell-to-cell interference as the dies get smaller. Bits can fail with excessively high numbers of program/erase cycles, which eventually break down the oxide layer that traps electrons. The deterioration can distort the manufacturer-set threshold value at which a charge is determined to be a zero or a one. Electrons may escape and get stuck in the oxide insulation layer, leading to errors and bit rot.
After spending eight hours researching and testing 12 card readers, we found that the IOGear USB-C 3-Slot Card Reader is the best option for anyone who needs an SD card reader for a new laptop with USB-C ports. The IOGear delivered fast, consistent speeds, and supports SD, microSD, and CF cards.
The Lexar Professional USB 3.0 Dual-Slot Reader was our former pick for USB-A ports, but Micron has since shuttered the Lexar brand. It was a little speedier than the Kingston when it worked—its read and write speeds were 27 MB/s and 12 MB/s faster than the Kingston, respectively—but the first two Lexar units we tested gave us only UHS-I speeds instead of faster UHS-II speeds on both Mac and Windows.
The first Satechi Type-C SD and microSD Card Reader unit we tested did not recognize SD or microSD cards on three different Windows laptops. The second unit we tested read SD cards only with the “Satechi” logo facing down, and it read microSD cards only with the logo facing up. When it did work, it had slow SD and microSD speeds between 30 MB/s and 40 MB/s when they should have been about twice that.

The presence of a notch, and the presence and position of a tab, have no effect on the SD card’s operation. A host device that supports write protection should refuse to write to an SD card that is designated read-only in this way. Some host devices do not support write protection, which is an optional feature of the SD specification. Drivers and devices that do obey a read-only indication may give the user a way to override it.
Video Speed Class defines a set of requirements for UHS cards to match the modern MLC NAND flash memory[19] and supports progressive 4K and 8K video with minimum sequential writing speeds of 6-90 MB/s.[17][34][40] The graphical symbols use ‘V’ followed by a number designating write speed (V6, V10, V30, V60, and V90).
SD cards are not the most economical solution in devices that need only a small amount of non-volatile memory, such as station presets in small radios. They may also not present the best choice for applications that require higher storage capacities or speeds as provided by other flash card standards such as CompactFlash. These limitations may be addressed by evolving memory technologies, such as the world’s highest capacity SanDisk Ultra 200GB microSD released in 2015.[89]
A process called Fowler-Nordheim tunneling removes electrons from the floating gate. Either Fowler-Nordheim tunneling or a phenomenon known as channel hot-electron injection traps the electrons in the floating gate.
Commonly found on the market are mislabeled or counterfeit Secure Digital cards that report a fake capacity or run slower than labeled.[90][91][92] Software tools exist to check and detect counterfeit products.[93][94]
