On the top of the controller are two “pressure-sensitive” trigger buttons marked “L” and “R”. Each essentially provides two functions: one analog and one digital. As the trigger is depressed, it emits an analog signal which increases the more it is pressed in. Once fully depressed, the trigger “clicks” registering a digital signal that can be used for a separate function within a game. There is also a purple, digital button on the right side marked “Z”.
The trademarked SD logo was originally developed for the Super Density Disc, which was the unsuccessful Toshiba entry in the DVD format war. For this reason the D within the logo resembles an optical disc.

Memory cards offer a number of advantages over a hard disk drive (HDD): they are much smaller and lighter, extremely portable, silent, allow more immediate access and are less prone to mechanical damage. However, an HDD still offers a compelling advantage: Although flash prices are coming down, a typical memory card still costs more (and has a lower storage capacity) than a high-capacity HDD.
The GameCube[b] is a home video game console released by Nintendo in Japan and North America in 2001 and Europe and Australia in 2002. The sixth generation console is the successor to the Nintendo 64 and competed with Sony Computer Entertainment’s PlayStation 2 and Microsoft’s Xbox.
Hamming codes are the most commonly used ECC for SLC NAND flash. Reed-Solomon codes and Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem codes are commonly used ECC for MLC NAND flash. Some MLC NAND flash chips internally generate the appropriate BCH error correction codes.

When NOR flash was developed, it was envisioned as a more economical and conveniently rewritable ROM than contemporary EPROM and EEPROM memories. Thus random-access reading circuitry was necessary. However, it was expected that NOR flash ROM would be read much more often than written, so the write circuitry included was fairly slow and could erase only in a block-wise fashion. On the other hand, applications that use flash as a replacement for disk drives do not require word-level write address, which would only add to the complexity and cost unnecessarily.
If your camera uses SD cards but your laptop lacks a card reader (or it has one, and you’re unimpressed by its speed), you’ll need a separate card reader that hooks up to your laptop via USB-C or USB-A to transfer your photos and videos.
USB flash drives are known as the floppy disks of the 21st century. You can see people walking around with them dangling from key chains, backpacks, and even around their necks. These are more resistant to physical abuse than the media cards used in digital cameras.
Flash dual inline memory module (DIMM), otherwise known as memory channel solid-state storage, which exploits idle DIMM DRAM slots as low-latency, high-performance flash cache to buffer host server performance.
UHS-II standard SDHC/SDXC cards were recently released by Sandisk and aim to offer quicker transfer rates, increasing write speeds up to 250MB/s or faster. The Sandisk Extreme Pro cards match up with the sheer amount of data streaming through the camera’s buffer when shooting lots of Raw files or high quality HD movies. Prices can range between around £50-£150 depending on the capacity (currently 16-64GB).
Compatibility with SD and CF cards: There are a wide variety of memory card formats, but the most prominent are Secure Digital (SD), microSD, and CompactFlash (CF). We looked for readers that support SD and CF cards to ensure compatibility with as many cameras as possible; although most people don’t need CF support nowadays, we considered them for professionals and people with older cameras. We also tried to find readers that support faster UHS-II speeds for SD cards,1 but couldn’t find any USB-C readers with both UHS-II support and a CF card slot.

The Iogear is about an inch skinnier and a half inch longer than the Unitek, measuring in at 3 by 1.6 by 0.5 inches. Although it’s technically shorter and lighter than the Unitek, its rounded top makes it appear bulkier. It also has a shiny black body that attracts fingerprints, and a short, 4.3-inch connecting cable attached to its back.
Additionally, as with live USB flash drives, an SD card can have an operating system installed on it. Computers that can boot from an SD card (either using a USB adapter or inserted into the computer’s flash media reader) instead of the hard disk drive may thereby be able to recover from a corrupted hard disk drive. Such an SD card can be write-locked to preserve the system’s integrity.

Nintendo developed stereoscopic 3D technology for the GameCube, and one launch game, Luigi’s Mansion, supports it. However, the feature was never enabled outside of development. 3D televisions were not widespread at the time, and it was deemed that compatible displays and crystals for the add-on accessories would be too cost-prohibitive for the consumer. Another unofficial feature are two audio Easter eggs that can be invoked when the console is turned on. When the power is activated with the “Z” button on the Player 1 controller held down, a more whimsical startup sound is heard in place of the standard one. With four controllers connected, holding down the “Z” button on all four simultaneously produces a “ninja-like” tune at startup.
After determining that the SD card supports it, the host device can also command the SD card to switch to a higher transfer speed. Until determining the card’s capabilities, the host device should not use a clock speed faster than 400 kHz. SD cards other than SDIO (see below) have a “Default Speed” clock rate of 25 MHz. The host device is not required to use the maximum clock speed that the card supports. It may operate at less than the maximum clock speed to conserve power. Between commands, the host device can stop the clock entirely.
SD/MMC cards replaced Toshiba’s SmartMedia as the dominant memory card format used in digital cameras. In 2001, SmartMedia had achieved nearly 50% use, but, by 2005, SD/MMC had achieved over 40% of the digital camera market and SmartMedia’s share had plummeted by 2007.
A malfunctioning SD card can be repaired using specialized equipment, as long as the middle part, containing the flash storage, is not physically damaged. The controller can in this way be circumvented.
Flash memory, also known as flash storage, is a type of nonvolatile memory that erases data in units called blocks. A block stored on a flash memory chip must be erased before data can be written or programmed to the microchip. Flash memory retains data for an extended period of time, regardless of whether a flash-equipped device is powered on or off.
The method used to read NAND flash memory can cause nearby cells in the same memory block to change over time (become programmed). This is known as read disturb. The threshold number of reads is generally in the hundreds of thousands of reads between intervening erase operations. If reading continually from one cell, that cell will not fail but rather one of the surrounding cells on a subsequent read. To avoid the read disturb problem the flash controller will typically count the total number of reads to a block since the last erase. When the count exceeds a target limit, the affected block is copied over to a new block, erased, then released to the block pool. The original block is as good as new after the erase. If the flash controller does not intervene in time, however, a read disturb error will occur with possible data loss if the errors are too numerous to correct with an error-correcting code.
At initial power-up or card insertion, the host device selects either the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) bus or the one-bit SD bus by the voltage level present on Pin 1. Thereafter, the host device may issue a command to switch to the four-bit SD bus interface, if the SD card supports it. For various card types, support for the four-bit SD bus is either optional or mandatory.
Over half the energy used by a 1.8 V NAND flash chip is lost in the charge pump itself. Since boost converters are inherently more efficient than charge pumps, researchers developing low-power SSDs have proposed returning to the dual Vcc/Vpp supply voltages used on all the early flash chips, driving the high Vpp voltage for all flash chips in a SSD with a single shared external boost converter.
The write endurance of SLC floating-gate NOR flash is typically equal to or greater than that of NAND flash, while MLC NOR and NAND flash have similar endurance capabilities. Examples of endurance cycle ratings listed in datasheets for NAND and NOR flash, as well as in storage devices using flash memory, are provided.
