In 2012, the CompactFlash Association announced the CFast 2.0 Standard, promising read and write speeds of more than double what was then the current standard. In September 2013, SanDisk released the first CFast 2.0 card, billed as the world’s fastest memory card, promising read speeds of up to 450MB/s and write speeds of up to 350MB/s.
The GameCube is the first Nintendo console to use optical discs as its primary storage medium. The Hyperdrive 3-in-1 Connection Kit gave us SD read and write speeds of 20 MB/s, though we should have been getting at least 80 MB/s on a UHS-I connection. This one is very simple. SD cards offer different storage capacities, and that amount of space determines the card’s size classification. Odds are the microSD card in your smartphone isn’t a microSD card. It’s a microSDHC card, or Micro Secure Digital High Capacity. “Standard” SD cards max out at 2GB capacity, based on their classification and the controller used by SD-only devices. Each NOR flash cell is larger than a NAND flash cell – 10 F2 vs 4 F2 – even when using exactly the same semiconductor device fabrication and so each transistor, contact, etc. is exactly the same size – because NOR flash cells require a separate metal contact for each cell.
We thought about the developers as our main customers. In particular for GameCube, we spent three years working with Nintendo of America and with all sorts of developers, trying to understand the challenges, needs, and problems they face. First among these is the rising cost of development. The GameCube can see high performance without too much trouble; it isn’t a quirky design, but a very clean one. It was important we didn’t require jumping through hoops for high performance to be achieved. On top of that, it is rich in features, and we worked to include a dream group of technical features that developers requested.
