Micron Technology and Intel Corp. have previewed a form of storage-class memory known as 3D XPoint (pronounced “cross point”). The vendors said they will produce flash drives that store 128 GB across two stacked layers of flash memory. 3D XPoint reportedly would be approximately 1,000 times faster than NAND flash, 1,000 times more enduring than DRAM and provide 10 times the storage density of existing NAND flash-based SSDs when it hits the market.

We thought about the developers as our main customers. In particular for GameCube, we spent three years working with Nintendo of America and with all sorts of developers, trying to understand the challenges, needs, and problems they face. First among these is the rising cost of development. The GameCube can see high performance without too much trouble; it isn’t a quirky design, but a very clean one. Early versions of the SD specification were available only after agreeing to a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) that prohibited development of an open source driver. However, the system was eventually reverse-engineered, and free software drivers provided access to SD cards that did not use DRM. Since then, the SDA has provided a simplified version of the specification under a less restrictive license. Although most open-source drivers were written before this, it has helped to solve compatibility issues.
Secure Digital cards are ubiquitous in consumer electronic devices and have become the dominant means of storing several gigabytes of data in a small form factor. The SDIO and SD interfaces are mechanically and electrically identical. Host devices built for SDIO cards generally accept SD memory cards without I/O functions. Vertical NAND (V-NAND) memory stacks memory cells vertically and uses a charge trap flash architecture. The vertical layers allow larger areal bit densities without requiring smaller individual cells.
I searched for advice on how to fix this – consensus seemed to be to uninstall the SDA driver and reinstall it. Fine – except I cannot find a place to download the driver! I have an integrated SD Card reader in my ASUS X012B Notebook PC
The most important features for an SD card reader are speed, physical size, and ease of use. Because most new laptops have at least one USB-C port—and some now have only USB-C ports—we focused on USB-C card readers for this guide. We also looked for readers that support both SD and CF cards to ensure compatibility with as many cameras as possible.
The SD Standard allows usage of only the above-mentioned Microsoft FAT file systems and any card produced in the market shall be preloaded with the related standard file system upon its delivery to the market. If any application or user re-formats the card with a non-standard file system the proper operation of the card, including interoperability, cannot be assured.
UHS memory cards work best with UHS host devices. The combination lets the user record HD resolution videos with tapeless camcorders while performing other functions. It is also suitable for real-time broadcasts and capturing large HD videos.
On the left side, there may be a write-protection notch. If the notch is omitted, the card can be read and written. If the card is notched, it is read-only. If the card has a notch and a sliding tab which covers the notch, the user can slide the tab upward (toward the contacts) to declare the card read/write, or downward to declare it read-only. The GameCube launched in Japan on September 14, 2001. Approximately 500,000 units were shipped in time to retailers. The console was scheduled to launch two months later in North America on November 5, 2001, but the date was pushed back in an effort to increase the number of available units. Although Tripp Lite’s USB 3.1 USB-C Multi-Drive Flash Memory Media Reader has similar speeds to the Unitek, its microSD port suffers from the same misalignment as the one on our runner-up pick, it’s missing an indicator light, and it costs nearly twice as much as the Unitek.
With early SD cards, a few card manufacturers specified the speed as a “times” (“×”) rating, which compared the average speed of reading data to that of the original CD-ROM drive. This was superseded by the Speed Class Rating, which guarantees a minimum rate at which data can be written to the card.
SDHC card: This card has the same form factor as an SD card, with specifications that define SDHC card capacities from 4 GB to 32 GB. These devices were developed to tackle high-definition video and high-resolution images. Although SD cards will work in an SDHC device, an SDHC card will not function in an SD card-based digital camera or card reader.
The GameCube is the first Nintendo console to use optical discs as its primary storage medium. The discs are similar to the miniDVD format; as a result of their smaller size and the console’s small disc compartment, the system was not designed to play standard DVDs or audio CDs. The console supports online gaming for a small number of games via the broadband or modem adapter and connects to the Game Boy Advance via the link cable, allowing players to access exclusive in-game features using the handheld as a second screen and controller.
SDHC cards are physically and electrically identical to standard-capacity SD cards (SDSC). The major compatibility issues between SDHC and SDSC cards are the redefinition of the Card-Specific Data (CSD) register in version 2.0 (see below), and the fact that SDHC cards are shipped preformatted with the FAT32 file system.
USB 3.0 speeds: We considered only USB 3.0 (or faster) card readers in this review, because outdated USB 2.0 card readers aren’t fast enough. Theoretically, USB 2.0 readers can deliver speeds up to 60 MB/s, but they regularly max out at 20 MB/s. With a USB 3.0 card reader, you should be able to enjoy the full speed of a UHS-I SD card. We made our picks based on their ability to deliver fast speeds for each card.

When it comes to flash memory cards, there are three aspects you need to consider: physical format, size, and speed. Each of the three variables has its own set of classes, so you can have anything from a 1GB Class 2 microSD card to a 32GB UHS-1 SDXC card. We’ll explore the distinctions below.
Speaking more generally, CompactFlash (CF) cards on the market can have a speed rating of 150MB/sec (1000x) and will work for a large variety of cameras, while most standard SDHC cards currently tend to be around 20-30MB/sec (133-200x). While there are also a few super-fast UHS-II U3 SDHC cards available now with potential write speeds of 250MB/s, these are also not as widely available for use in all cameras and do start to get rather pricey.
Micro SD Card Reader drivers are tiny programs that enable your Micro SD Card Reader hardware to communicate with your operating system software. Maintaining updated Micro SD Card Reader software prevents crashes and maximizes hardware and system performance. Using outdated or corrupt Micro SD Card Reader drivers can cause system errors, crashes, and cause your computer or hardware to fail. Furthermore, installing the wrong Micro SD Card Reader drivers can make these problems even worse.
Write amplification: The flash controller may need to overwrite more data than requested. This has to do with performing read-modify-write operations on write blocks, freeing up (the much larger) erase blocks, while moving data around to achieve wear leveling.
NOR and NAND flash memory differ in architecture and design characteristics. NOR flash uses no shared components and can connect individual memory cells in parallel, enabling random access to data. A NAND flash cell is more compact and has fewer bit lines, stringing together floating gate transistors to increase storage density.
xD cards are simply 18-pin NAND flash chips in a special package and support the standard command set for raw NAND flash access. Although the raw hardware interface to xD cards is well understood, the layout of its memory contents—necessary for interoperability with xD card readers and digital cameras—is totally undocumented. The consortium that licenses xD cards has not released any technical information to the public.
EPROM and EEPROM cells operate similarly to flash memory in how data is written, or programmed, but differ from flash memory in how data is erased. An EPROM is erased by removing the chip from the system and exposing the array to ultraviolet light. An EEPROM erases data electronically at the byte level, while flash memory erases data electronically at the block level.
During transfer it may be in the range of 66–330 mW (20–100 mA at a supply voltage of 3.3 V). Specifications from TwinMos technologies list a maximum of 149 mW (45 mA) during transfer. Toshiba lists 264–330 mW (80–100 mA). Standby current is much lower, less than 0.2 mA for one 2006 microSD card. If there is data transfer for significant periods, battery life may be reduced noticeably (smartphones typically have batteries of capacity around 6 Wh (Samsung Galaxy S2, 1650 mAh @ 3.7 V)).
The Iogear lacks an indicator light—a useful feature offered on other card readers, including our top pick, that reassured us the device was working during our tests. Unlike the Unitek, which had sturdy slots that worked the way they should, we found that the Iogear’s SD card slot was a bit too shallow, and the microSD card slot on the unit we tested was slightly misaligned. At one point during testing, we were concerned about breaking the microSD card by jamming it into the janky slot. (Removing it is just as difficult.) We also tried inserting our CF card right-side up, but it wouldn’t fit into the Iogear’s CF slot. After around 30 seconds wasting time and risking damage to the slot and card we realized we had to insert our CF card upside down (in relation to the logo and the SD and microSD slots) for the Iogear to recognize it. The Unitek’s slots work intuitively and identify every card right-side up.
A flash memory card (sometimes called a storage card) is a small storage device that uses nonvolatile semiconductor memory to store data on portable or remote computing devices. Such data includes text, pictures, audio and video. Most current products use flash memory, although other memory technologies are being developed, including devices that combine dynamic random access memory (DRAM) with flash memory.
Some prosumer and professional digital cameras continued to offer CompactFlash (CF), either on a second card slot or as the only storage, as CF supports much higher maximum capacities and historically was cheaper for the same capacity.
In 2006, the SDA released a simplified version of the specification of the host controller interface (as opposed to the specification of SD cards) and later also for the physical layer, ASSD extensions, SDIO, and SDIO Bluetooth Type-A, under a disclaimers agreement. Again, most of the information had already been discovered and Linux had a fully free driver for it. Still, building a chip conforming to this specification caused the One Laptop per Child project to claim “the first truly Open Source SD implementation, with no need to obtain an SDI license or sign NDAs to create SD drivers or applications.”
USB drive: This portable plug-and-play flash storage device is inserted into a computer’s standard USB port. USB drives ushered in the demise of floppy disks and, to some extent, the reduced use of compact discs.

However, when I look at “This PC” (I am on Windows 10) via File Explorer, I still cannot see anything that looks like an SD drive listed…. I’m back to square one. All I want to do is format an SD card (and a Micro SD card via an adapter) via the slot in the Notebook- but it seems not to be possible….

Application Performance Class is a newly defined standard from the SD Specification 5.1 and 6.0 which not only define sequential Reading Speeds but also mandates a minimum IOPS for reading and writing. Class A1 requires a minimum of 1500 reading and 500 writing operations per second, while class A2 requires 4000 and 2000 IOPS.

Although many personal computers accommodate SD cards as an auxiliary storage device using a built-in slot, or can accommodate SD cards by means of a USB adapter, SD cards cannot be used as the primary hard disk through the onboard ATA controller, because none of the SD card variants support ATA signalling. Primary hard disk use requires a separate SD controller chip or an SD-to-CompactFlash converter. However, on computers that support bootstrapping from a USB interface, an SD card in a USB adapter can be the primary hard disk, provided it contains an operating system that supports USB access once the bootstrap is complete.
These cards are each pre-packed in a certified Frustration Free Packaging (FFP) mailer labelled Amazon/SanDisk (No. 80-56-10641), and then shipped in a bubble wrap envelope which was 11.25″ x 9″. The bubble envelope seemed too big, but perhaps that size was necessary to accommodate the huge shipping label. I will post some pictures of the package and card.
This reader does exactly what it says – it can read and write regular SD cards and MicroSD cards. The speeds aren’t amazing, but it will get the job done. It takes around a minute or more to transfer a 1 GB file, versus a USB 3.0 reader (on USB 2.0) taking around 30 seconds or less. As discussed above, the memory card options available to you are limited by the device you are using it in. Each device has a discrete set of compatible card choices. Check your device carefully, as many cameras have multiple memory card slots, giving you more options of what cards you can use.
In addition, speed may vary markedly between writing a large amount of data to a single file (sequential access, as when a digital camera records large photographs or videos) and writing a large number of small files (a random-access use common in smartphones). A study in 2012 found that, in this random-access use, some Class 2 cards achieved a write speed of 1.38 MB/s, while all cards tested of Class 6 or greater (and some of lower Classes; lower Class does not necessarily mean better small-file performance), including those from major manufacturers, were over 100 times slower. In 2014, a blogger measured a 300-fold performance difference on small writes; this time, the best card in this category was a class 4 card.
Micro SD cards were initially a popular method of storing images in mobile phones. In actual size they are the smallest commercially available memory card at 15×11×1mm but can store up to 2GB of information. The Micro SDHC versions are able to store much larger files from 4GB-32GB. Micro SD cards are now more commonly seen in GPS systems and MP3 players, however a small number of digital cameras (recent Samsung compact models) are also compatible with them.
If you just bought a brand-new laptop and suddenly find yourself lacking a built-in SD reader, you may need a USB-C model.
