SDXC was announced at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2009 (January 7–10, 2009). At the same show, SanDisk and Sony also announced a comparable Memory Stick XC variant with the same 2 TB maximum as SDXC, and Panasonic announced plans to produce 64 GB SDXC cards.
When dealing with larger, high-resolution files, you may think that capacity is your first concern. However, the speed of a memory card plays a huge part when filming 4K video, taking large print-quality photos, and taking rapid burst shots. This type of photography may require a higher write or read speed in order to process data quickly. When looking at memory cards, it’s important to delineate write speed and read speed and make sure you get what works best for each.
In addition, speed may vary markedly between writing a large amount of data to a single file (sequential access, as when a digital camera records large photographs or videos) and writing a large number of small files (a random-access use common in smartphones). A study in 2012 found that, in this random-access use, some Class 2 cards achieved a write speed of 1.38 MB/s, while all cards tested of Class 6 or greater (and some of lower Classes; lower Class does not necessarily mean better small-file performance), including those from major manufacturers, were over 100 times slower. In 2014, a blogger measured a 300-fold performance difference on small writes; this time, the best card in this category was a class 4 card.
There are two major SPI flash types. The first type is characterized by small pages and one or more internal SRAM page buffers allowing a complete page to be read to the buffer, partially modified, and then written back (for example, the Atmel AT45 DataFlash or the Micron Technology Page Erase NOR Flash). The second type has larger sectors. The smallest sectors typically found in an SPI flash are 4 kB, but they can be as large as 64 kB. Since the SPI flash lacks an internal SRAM buffer, the complete page must be read out and modified before being written back, making it slow to manage. SPI flash is cheaper than DataFlash and is therefore a good choice when the application is code shadowing.
The GameCube launched in Japan on September 14, 2001. Approximately 500,000 units were shipped in time to retailers. The console was scheduled to launch two months later in North America on November 5, 2001, but the date was pushed back in an effort to increase the number of available units. The console eventually launched in North America on November 18, 2001, with over 700,000 units shipped to the region. Other regions followed suit the following year beginning with Europe in the second quarter of 2002.
The SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-II Card USB-C Reader was our previous recommendation for UHS-II speeds, but it costs nearly three times as much as the Verbatim, and it doesn’t have a microSD slot. Its SD card read and write speeds were about 39 MB/s and 31 MB/s faster than the Verbatim’s, though, and it has a useful indicator light and a simple design.
The latest format for top-end cameras and camcorders is XQD. Even faster than CFast, it has the fastest write speed of all. Found in select top-end cameras, XQD is PCIe based, and doesn’t have the same speed limitations as CFast or CompactFlash. Often a top-end camera will use either CFast or XQD, but not both.
I ordered the IOGEAR SD/MicroSD/MMC Card Reader/Writer GFR204SD and got it in the mail about three days after ordering [impressive]. As some other reviewers have noted, it does feel a little flimsy, and care should be taken to insert and remove it AS STRAIGHT AS YOU CAN from whatever device you use it in, especially when it’s a very tight fit into the USB port.
Compared to NOR flash, replacing single transistors with serial-linked groups adds an extra level of addressing. Whereas NOR flash might address memory by page then word, NAND flash might address it by page, word and bit. Bit-level addressing suits bit-serial applications (such as hard disk emulation), which access only one bit at a time. Execute-in-place applications, on the other hand, require every bit in a word to be accessed simultaneously. This requires word-level addressing. In any case, both bit and word addressing modes are possible with either NOR or NAND flash.

Due to its relatively simple structure and high demand for higher capacity, NAND flash memory is the most aggressively scaled technology among electronic devices. The heavy competition among the top few manufacturers only adds to the aggressiveness in shrinking the design rule or process technology node. While the expected shrink timeline is a factor of two every three years per original version of Moore’s law, this has recently been accelerated in the case of NAND flash to a factor of two every two years.

MultiMediaCard: Developed in 1997 by SanDisk and Siemens, MMCs were originally designed to use NAND flash memory technology from Toshiba. However, MMCs are less common with the arrival of SD card technology. Most computer hardware vendors no longer provide ports for inserting an MMC device. A new development is embedded MMC, or eMMC, in which the flash card is integrated on the computer motherboard along with controller software to use the eMMC as a bootable system drive. MMCs weigh approximately two grams.
For the first 6 months, things seemed to work fine. Files were copied successfully, no corruption issues occurred. The only interesting thing is that the SD card reader would get very hot to the touch – even when doing nothing! (In comparison, the Transcend USB 3.0 reader does get pretty warm as well, but only when data is actually being transferred.)
When it comes to flash memory cards, there are three aspects you need to consider: physical format, size, and speed. Each of the three variables has its own set of classes, so you can have anything from a 1GB Class 2 microSD card to a 32GB UHS-1 SDXC card. We’ll explore the distinctions below.
Flash is the least expensive form of semiconductor memory. SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards have a “Protected Area” on the card for the SD standard’s security function; a standard formatter may erase it, causing problems if security is used. The SD Association provides freely-downloadable SD Formatter software to overcome these problems for Windows and Mac OS X. The SD Formatter does not format the “Protected Area”, and the Association recommends the use of appropriate application software or SD-compatible device that provides SD security function to format the “Protected Area” in the memory card.

Like its predecessor, the Nintendo 64, GameCube models were produced in several different color motifs. The system launched in “Indigo”, the primary color shown in advertising and on the logo, and in “Jet Black”. A year later, Nintendo released a “Platinum” limited edition GameCube, which uses a silver color scheme for both the console and controller. A “Spice” orange-colored console was eventually released as well only in Japan, though the color scheme could be found on controllers released in other countries.

We were really surprised with this little USB SD/Micro SD/MMC reader. The design is reminiscent of older USB flash sticks and as such may be a little awkward when used on a laptop machine in one’s lap. It comes complete with a small cap to go over the USB port, and like flash sticks, can get lost quite easily, but that’s all we could find to complain about.
If you need a USB-A card reader, or a reader that can take both CF cards and high-speed UHS-II SD cards, the Kingston USB 3.0 High-Speed Media Reader is your best bet. The Kingston supports SD, microSD, CF, and Memory Stick cards, and it reliably transferred data at UHS-II speeds in our SD card tests. These are SD memory cards but with a higher capacity. Original SD cards only went up to 2GB, so SDHC was invented with a maximum capacity of 32GB. They are identical in shape and size, but they are different media types. Though your camera may fit a SDHC, be careful because if the camera was made before SDHC came along it may not recognise it.
NAND flash has reduced erase and write times, and requires less chip area per cell, thus allowing greater storage density and lower cost per bit than NOR flash; it also has up to 10 times the endurance of NOR flash. However, the I/O interface of NAND flash does not provide a random-access external address bus. Rather, data must be read on a block-wise basis, with typical block sizes of hundreds to thousands of bits. This makes NAND flash unsuitable as a drop-in replacement for program ROM, since most microprocessors and microcontrollers require byte-level random access. In this regard, NAND flash is similar to other secondary data storage devices, such as hard disks and optical media, and is thus highly suitable for use in mass-storage devices, such as memory cards.
