It takes up the most space of all our picks, measuring 3.5 by 2 by 0.6 inches, and it weighs 4 ounces. The Kingston card reader isn’t terrible to look at, despite the loud red-and-white design on its top (including a large, red “Kingston” logo that doubles as an indicator light), but it isn’t as attractive as other readers we tested. It comes bundled with a removable, 43-inch connecting cable. None of the other readers we tested had a cable that was this long, or removable.
The SD Association defines standard speed classes for SDHC/SDXC cards indicating minimum performance (minimum serial data writing speed). Both read and write speeds must exceed the specified value. To read data, first the desired group is selected (in the same way that a single transistor is selected from a NOR array). Next, most of the word lines are pulled up above the VT of a programmed bit, while one of them is pulled up to just over the VT of an erased bit. The series group will conduct (and pull the bit line low) if the selected bit has not been programmed.
When an SD is inserted, the driver appears in the device manager and a drive letter is assigned. An update request indicates the driver is up-to-date. Uninstalling and reinstalling the driver does not help. There were popups asking to reformat the card, but don’t do it because the card is not the problem. Win 7 read all my cards just fine, and Win 10 does not.

Nintendo learned from its experiences – both positive and negative – with the Nintendo 64’s three-handled controller design and went with a two-handled, “handlebar” design for the GameCube. The shape was made popular by Sony’s PlayStation controller released in 1994 and its follow-up DualShock series of gamepads introduced in 1997. In addition to vibration feedback, the DualShock series was well known for having two analog sticks to improve the 3D experience in games. Nintendo and Microsoft designed similar features in the controllers for their sixth-generation consoles, but instead of having the analog sticks parallel to each other, they chose to stagger them by swapping the positions of the directional pad (d-pad) and left analog stick. The GameCube controller features a total of eight buttons, two analog sticks, a d-pad, and an internal rumble motor. The primary analog stick is on the left with the d-pad located below and closer to the center. On the right are four buttons: a large, green “A” button in the center, a smaller red “B” button to the left, an “X” button to the right, and a “Y” button at the top. Below and to the inside is a yellow “C” analog stick, which often serves a variety of in-game functions, such as controlling the camera angle. The Start/Pause button is located in the middle, and the rumble motor is encased within the center of the controller.
A big bright blue indicator light makes life easier, lighting up when connected to your computer and flashing when accessed. We used it on a laptop with Windows 7 to access a 1 Gb micro SD card that…. wait for it…. had been horribly and evilly, and quite accidentally drowned in the washing machine (Mr. Mr. doesn’t know how to check his pants pockets when I’m screaming ‘Hurry up already!’… obviously all his fault!), and it worked flawlessly with the tiny drowned card! Reliability and warranty: It’s vital that a card reader works the way it’s meant to. We tested a surprising number of units in this category that were defective or performed inconsistently. Pre-loaded content – In 2006, SanDisk announced Gruvi, a microSD card with extra digital rights management features, which they intended as a medium for publishing content. SanDisk again announced pre-loaded cards in 2008, under the slotMusic name, this time not using any of the DRM capabilities of the SD card. In 2011, SanDisk offered various collections of 1000 songs on a single slotMusic card for about $40, now restricted to compatible devices and without the ability to copy the files.
NAND flash has reduced erase and write times, and requires less chip area per cell, thus allowing greater storage density and lower cost per bit than NOR flash; it also has up to 10 times the endurance of NOR flash. However, the I/O interface of NAND flash does not provide a random-access external address bus. Rather, data must be read on a block-wise basis, with typical block sizes of hundreds to thousands of bits. This makes NAND flash unsuitable as a drop-in replacement for program ROM, since most microprocessors and microcontrollers require byte-level random access. In this regard, NAND flash is similar to other secondary data storage devices, such as hard disks and optical media, and is thus highly suitable for use in mass-storage devices, such as memory cards. Anyway – just as I was about to order this same card bundled in a two pack, I saw the link for “38 sellers offer this product” and clicked the link. Huzzah – here was the same card, less expensive, and SOLD from the MANUFACTURER, SanDisk! The worries about getting a product other than described or represented was eliminated! This product was coming directly from SanDisk and was fulfilled by Amazon.
Flash memory is used in enterprise server, storage and networking technology, as well as in a wide range of consumer devices, including USB flash drives, mobile phones, digital cameras, tablet computers, PC cards in notebook computers and embedded controllers. NOR flash is more expensive to produce than NAND flash and tends to be used primarily in consumer and embedded devices for boot purposes and read-only applications for code storage. NAND flash is more suitable for data storage in consumer devices and enterprise server and storage systems due to its lower cost per bit to store data, greater density, and higher programming and erase (P/E) speeds.

I was very disappointed on my trip to Antarctica to find that I couldn’t transfer my photos from my SD card to my iPad because I received an error message stating accessory not supported by this iPad. When I investigated this error message online, I saw a plethora of posts dating back to October of 2017 that the update to ios11 has made this accessory useless. Apple has had 5 months since the update to rectify this issue but has chosen not to. A SDIO (Secure Digital Input Output) card is an extension of the SD specification to cover I/O functions. SDIO cards are only fully functional in host devices designed to support their input-output functions (typically PDAs like the Palm Treo, but occasionally laptops or mobile phones). These devices can use the SD slot to support GPS receivers, modems, barcode readers, FM radio tuners, TV tuners, RFID readers, digital cameras, and interfaces to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Ethernet, and IrDA. Many other SDIO devices have been proposed, but it is now more common for I/O devices to connect using the USB interface.

We were really surprised with this little USB SD/Micro SD/MMC reader. The design is reminiscent of older USB flash sticks and as such may be a little awkward when used on a laptop machine in one’s lap. It comes complete with a small cap to go over the USB port, and like flash sticks, can get lost quite easily, but that’s all we could find to complain about.
Due to its relatively simple structure and high demand for higher capacity, NAND flash memory is the most aggressively scaled technology among electronic devices. The heavy competition among the top few manufacturers only adds to the aggressiveness in shrinking the design rule or process technology node. While the expected shrink timeline is a factor of two every three years per original version of Moore’s law, this has recently been accelerated in the case of NAND flash to a factor of two every two years.

Many of Nintendo’s own first-party games, such as Super Smash Bros. Melee and Mario Kart: Double Dash‼, saw strong sales, though this did not typically benefit third-party developers or directly drive sales of their games. Many cross-platform games — such as sports franchises released by Electronic Arts — were sold in numbers far below their PlayStation 2 and Xbox counterparts, eventually prompting some developers to scale back or completely cease support for the GameCube. Exceptions include Sega’s family friendly Sonic Adventure 2 and Super Monkey Ball, which reportedly yielded more sales on GameCube than most of the company’s games on the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. After several years of losing money from developing for Nintendo’s console, Eidos Interactive announced in September 2003 that it would end support for the GameCube, canceling several games that were in development. Later, however, Eidos resumed development of GameCube games, releasing hit games such as Lego Star Wars: The Video Game and Tomb Raider: Legend. In addition, several third-party games originally intended to be GameCube exclusives – most notably Resident Evil 4 – were eventually ported to other systems in an attempt to maximize profits following lackluster sales of the original GameCube versions.
