SDXC cards utilize the exFAT file system, the use of which is governed by a proprietary license, thereby limiting its legal availability to a small set of operating systems. Therefore, exFAT-formatted SDXC cards are not a universally readable exchange medium.
The GameCube is the first Nintendo console to use optical discs as its primary storage medium. Nintendo learned from its experiences – both positive and negative – with the Nintendo 64’s three-handled controller design and went with a two-handled, “handlebar” design for the GameCube. The shape was made popular by Sony’s PlayStation controller released in 1994 and its follow-up DualShock series of gamepads introduced in 1997. In addition to vibration feedback, the DualShock series was well known for having two analog sticks to improve the 3D experience in games. Nintendo and Microsoft designed similar features in the controllers for their sixth-generation consoles, but instead of having the analog sticks parallel to each other, they chose to stagger them by swapping the positions of the directional pad (d-pad) and left analog stick. The GameCube controller features a total of eight buttons, two analog sticks, a d-pad, and an internal rumble motor. The primary analog stick is on the left with the d-pad located below and closer to the center. On the right are four buttons: a large, green “A” button in the center, a smaller red “B” button to the left, an “X” button to the right, and a “Y” button at the top. Below and to the inside is a yellow “C” analog stick, which often serves a variety of in-game functions, such as controlling the camera angle. The Start/Pause button is located in the middle, and the rumble motor is encased within the center of the controller.
I’m not a tech wiz but I’m by no means a complete moron when it comes to technology but I was somewhat distressed to find how little I knew about memory cards. I had received one with a little no frills digital camera a few years ago & had used them already but a recent faux pas brought my ignorance to light. I was at one of my daughter’s competitions with my little Panasonic video camera intending to record her show (she does color guard). We had bought the video camera a couple of years ago. It needed a memory card so I just took the one out of my other camera thinking that’s what I needed. Here’s where not realizing the difference between MB and GB ruined my plans.Trying to record the show, I kept getting the message that the memory was full. Turns out… The card was just 512MB! Those of you in the know are laughing I’m sure…yep, that may be fine for photos but NOT video..So after finding out 1 GB is roughly the same as 1000 MB, I knew what to look for. This card has a good amount of memory. I’ve recorded several of my daughter’s routines and still show as having just under half the memory available. I also have found that you get what you pay for. I bought a generic card that didn’t work and another that got corrupted quickly so I only trust SanDisk now! My next step is getting a 32GB and having a backup card at all times!
If you just bought a brand-new laptop and suddenly find yourself lacking a built-in SD reader, you may need a USB-C model. All of the latest MacBooks (including the 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro models) have only USB-C ports, and no SD card readers. Some new Windows laptops exclusively use USB-C ports, too, and others have a mix of USB types and no built-in SD card slot.
A Class 2 card can handle sustained writing of data at a rate of 2MB/sec; a Class 4 card achieves 4MB/sec; a Class 8 card 8MB/sec, and so on. However, this is the minimum rate rather than the actual rate. It’s entirely possible a Class 4 SDXC card will also brandish 15MB/s on its exterior – a claim that can only be made as a possible speed rather than a full-time sustainable one.
2) I put it in the camera, and the Nikon D40 immediately formatted the card and it was ready for use. The information screen said that it was ready to hold 2.2K (2200) pictures. I held down the shutter in continuous mode, and fired off about 20 seconds of pictures (the D40 shoots somewhere around 3 or 3.3 pics per second in burst mode). There was no stutter, lag, etc. when writing to the card. This SDHC card (remember different format than SD, which was the format available when I bought the camera) worked flawlessly in this little test. I buy only SanDisk or Lexar products, and I can say that media from neither company has ever let me down. The two Lexar cards have stored downloaded and erased around 72K pictures over six years, generally at 300-500 pics per download/erase/format cycle and are still going strong with the original capacity intact.
The SD specification defines four-bit-wide transfers. (The MMC specification supports this and also defines an eight-bit-wide mode; MMC cards with extended bits were not accepted by the market.) Transferring several bits on each clock pulse improves the card speed. Advanced SD families have also improved speed by offering faster clock frequencies and double data rate (explained here) in a high-speed differential interface (UHS-II).

Initiating the GameCube’s design in 1998, Nintendo partnered with ArtX (then acquired by ATI Technologies during development) for the system logic and the GPU, and with IBM for the CPU. IBM designed a PowerPC-based processor for the next-generation console, known as Gekko, which runs at 485 MHz and features a floating point unit (FPU) capable of 1.9 GFLOPS. Designed at 0.18 microns and described as “an extension of the IBM Power PC architecture”, Gekko features IBM’s reportedly then-unique copper-based chip manufacturing technology. Codenamed “Flipper”, the GPU runs at 162 MHz and, in addition to graphics, manages other tasks through its audio and input/output (I/O) processors.
The proprietary nature of the complete SD specification affects embedded systems, laptop computers, and some desktop computers; many desktop computers do not have card slots, instead using USB-based card readers if necessary. These card readers present a standard USB mass storage interface to memory cards, thus separating the operating system from the details of the underlying SD interface. However, embedded systems (such as portable music players) usually gain direct access to SD cards and thus need complete programming information. Desktop card readers are themselves embedded systems; their manufacturers have usually paid the SDA for complete access to the SD specifications. Many notebook computers now include SD card readers not based on USB; device drivers for these essentially gain direct access to the SD card, as do embedded systems.
A group of vendors, including Intel, Dell, and Microsoft, formed a Non-Volatile Memory Host Controller Interface (NVMHCI) Working Group. The goal of the group is to provide standard software and hardware programming interfaces for nonvolatile memory subsystems, including the “flash cache” device connected to the PCI Express bus.
After determining that the SD card supports it, the host device can also command the SD card to switch to a higher transfer speed. Until determining the card’s capabilities, the host device should not use a clock speed faster than 400 kHz. SD cards other than SDIO (see below) have a “Default Speed” clock rate of 25 MHz. The host device is not required to use the maximum clock speed that the card supports. It may operate at less than the maximum clock speed to conserve power. Between commands, the host device can stop the clock entirely.

The Insignia NS-DCR30A2 USB 3.0 Multiformat Memory Card Reader I bought at Best Buy also works with USB 2 and reads my cards up to and including the 64GB SDXC. (An older external reader I had would not handle the 32 and 64GB cards.)
Another memory card type used in top-end professional cameras and camcorders is CFast. A variant of CompactFlash, this memory card format has an extremely fast write speed and can be used in cameras that capture the highest quality images and video.
If your camera uses SD cards but your laptop lacks a card reader (or it has one, and you’re unimpressed by its speed), you’ll need a separate card reader that hooks up to your laptop via USB-C or USB-A to transfer your photos and videos.
SDXC was announced at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2009 (January 7–10, 2009). At the same show, SanDisk and Sony also announced a comparable Memory Stick XC variant with the same 2 TB maximum as SDXC, and Panasonic announced plans to produce 64 GB SDXC cards.
The nonvolatile memory express (NVMe) protocol is a specification that permits an SSD to exploit the PCIe bus. NVMe operates at the host controller to define the command set and feature set needed to streamline the I/O stack. The aim is to enable PCIe-based SSDs to deliver low latency, higher throughput, and to consume less power when compared to SAS or SATA SSDs.
