The write speed describes how fast images can be saved onto a card, which is important when shooting bursts of images in continuous shooting mode, HD video or when using high resolution cameras that shoot particularly large files.

Flash memory, also known as flash storage, is a type of nonvolatile memory that erases data in units called blocks. A block stored on a flash memory chip must be erased before data can be written or programmed to the microchip. Flash memory retains data for an extended period of time, regardless of whether a flash-equipped device is powered on or off.
Version 1.01 let an SDSC card use a 4-bit field to indicate 1,024 or 2,048 bytes per block instead. Doing so enabled cards with 2 GB and 4 GB capacity, such as the Transcend 4 GB SD card and the Memorette 4GB SD card.
The Kingston had read and write speeds of 159 MB/s and 127 MB/s, respectively, during our SD card test. In our microSD card test, it had expected read and write speeds of 83 MB/s and 69 MB/s. It was a bit slower when reading and writing to a CF card, with speeds of 127 MB/s and 107 MB/s.
Anyway – just as I was about to order this same card bundled in a two pack, I saw the link for “38 sellers offer this product” and clicked the link. Huzzah – here was the same card, less expensive, and SOLD from the MANUFACTURER, SanDisk! The worries about getting a product other than described or represented was eliminated! This product was coming directly from SanDisk and was fulfilled by Amazon.
NOR and NAND flash get their names from the structure of the interconnections between memory cells. In NOR flash, cells are connected in parallel to the bit lines, allowing cells to be read and programmed individually. The parallel connection of cells resembles the parallel connection of transistors in a CMOS NOR gate. In NAND flash, cells are connected in series, resembling a NAND gate. The series connections consume less space than parallel ones, reducing the cost of NAND flash. It does not, by itself, prevent NAND cells from being read and programmed individually.
SD/MMC cards replaced Toshiba’s SmartMedia as the dominant memory card format used in digital cameras. In 2001, SmartMedia had achieved nearly 50% use, but, by 2005, SD/MMC had achieved over 40% of the digital camera market and SmartMedia’s share had plummeted by 2007.
Two major flash device manufacturers, Toshiba and Samsung, have chosen to use an interface of their own design known as Toggle Mode (and now Toggle V2.0). This interface isn’t pin-to-pin compatible with the ONFI specification. The result is a product designed for one vendor’s devices may not be able to use another vendor’s devices.
When you plug it in, the clear LED lights up as a bright blue – something you may wish to cover with a piece of scotch tape if bright blue lights at night bother you! When you’re reading or copying files to the SD card, the little blue light on top blinks to indicate data activity.

In these cases, you will be more concerned about the card’s storage capacity than its speed. Though they are small, microSD cards can offer large capacities of 128GB and more. Flash memory devices are typically much faster at reading than writing. Performance also depends on the quality of storage controllers which become more critical when devices are partially full. Even when the only change to manufacturing is die-shrink, the absence of an appropriate controller can result in degraded speeds.
The standard SD card is the largest and has been in use the longest, measuring 32 by 24 by 2.1 mm (HWD), weighing 2 grams, and showing the signature cut-corner profile SD cards are known for. Most digital cameras you can buy today use standard-size SD cards. Even though they’re the largest SD card, they’re still very small, and are dwarfed by the CompactFlash cards used by professional photographers in high-end digital cameras, like the $5,000 Canon 1D Mark IV. However, the cards can get even smaller.
Since late 2009, newer Apple computers with installed SD card readers have been able to boot in macOS from SD storage devices, when properly formatted to Mac OS Extended file format and the default partition table set to GUID Partition Table. (See Other file systems below).
Most NAND devices are shipped from the factory with some bad blocks. These are typically marked according to a specified bad block marking strategy. By allowing some bad blocks, the manufacturers achieve far higher yields than would be possible if all blocks had to be verified good. This significantly reduces NAND flash costs and only slightly decreases the storage capacity of the parts.
For example, if your host device requires a Speed Class 4 SD memory card, you can use Speed Class 4, 6 or 10 SD memory cards. If your host device requires a UHS Speed Class 1 SD memory card, you can use UHS Speed Class 1 or 3 SD memory cards. Video Speed Class is also the same. Note that expected write speed will not be available by a combination of different class symbols such as Class 10, U1 and V10 even those are indicated to the same 10MB/sec write speed.

An individual memory cell is made up of one planar polysilicon layer containing a hole filled by multiple concentric vertical cylinders. The hole’s polysilicon surface acts as the gate electrode. The outermost silicon dioxide cylinder acts as the gate dielectric, enclosing a silicon nitride cylinder that stores charge, in turn enclosing a silicon dioxide cylinder as the tunnel dielectric that surrounds a central rod of conducting polysilicon which acts as the conducting channel.

Video Speed Class defines a set of requirements for UHS cards to match the modern MLC NAND flash memory and supports progressive 4K and 8K video with minimum sequential writing speeds of 6-90 MB/s. There remain some aspects of flash-based SSDs that make them unattractive. The cost per gigabyte of flash memory remains significantly higher than that of hard disks. Also flash memory has a finite number of P/E cycles, but this seems to be currently under control since warranties on flash-based SSDs are approaching those of current hard drives. In addition, deleted files on SSDs can remain for an indefinite period of time before being overwritten by fresh data; erasure or shred techniques or software that work well on magnetic hard disk drives have no effect on SSDs, compromising security and forensic examination.

The SD and Micro SD work perfectly fine in this reader, and the transfer speeds are very impressive; instant, actually. It would take my old Galaxy S II about two minutes to sync with my [then] car once starting it, with about 2-6GB of music on it at any given time. My reader syncs my 7.25 GB collection as soon as I turn the engine over. and the quick, efficient sync has been consistent with every subsequent car I’ve used it in.
