Once you know what formats you can pick from, you’ll want to think about what you’ll be using your device to do. Different tasks require varying amounts of card capacity and write speed (both explained below):
I’ve long been a fan of Sandisk, and have faithfully used their compact flash memory cards in all my digital cameras, so imagine my surprise to have two 16 GB and two 32 GB cards fail in two different Samsung Galaxy SIII phones so far, taking all data with them. The cards cannot be accessed or formatted, either in the phone or on the computer. I’ve finally contacted Sandisk support, but after reading a lot of review on the web concerning this issue (and trying all the various workarounds posted), I’m not confident that Sandisk will be able to help me. There frankly should be NO WAY for an SD interface to make a card unusable, short of physically destroying it with overvoltage, period. I’m an embedded systems engineer (30+ years experience) and there is NO EXCUSE for Sandisk cards failing like this, unless the phone is doing something evil electrically to them. Please beware, and back up your files often, because it WILL FAIL eventually.

Using your computer, create a folder called “DCIM” to the root of your SD card (or microSD). 3. Copy the images/videos into the DCIM folder. 4. Rename each image/video file like this “GOPRXXXX”, where XXXX is a unique and incrementing number. For example, if you had one JPG file and one .MOV file, name them GOPR0001.JPG and GOPR0002.MOV. Incrementing numbers may not be required, but “GOPR” + 4 numeric characters are. 5. Safely eject SD card from computer, plug Reader into the iOS device, place SD card into the Reader, and Photos app should open. If you’re file naming is acceptable, Import will remain open and allow you to view/import the files. Import and you’re done! Note #1: Other common digital-camera file naming conventions will most likely work. Note #2: I’ve successfully imported several image filetypes: .jpg, .png, .raw. And these video types: .mov, .m4v, .MP4. I am sure many more will work. Also, you can have a mix of filetypes on the SD card simultaneously, and the import will work. For example, import will work with .jpg and .png and .m4v files on the card at the same time. This reader itself deserves 4 or 5 stars. It worked for me with several microSDHC cards of various levels of quality, each using a different SD adapter. However, it’s the Photos app I find problematic. I think it’s pretty cool you can use standard SD and Micro SD in it, but I opted to use my 16GB Micro SDHC from my old phone because standard SD sticks WAY out (be sure to insert the Micro SD upside down). The Micro SD still sticks out from the side of the reader about 1/4″, and I’m curious to know why they couldn’t have designed the reader to accept Micro SD from the rear of it so you won’t accidentally tug on it when inserting/removing the reader.
Intel Corporation introduced the first commercial NOR type flash chip in 1988. NOR-based flash has long erase and write times, but provides full address and data buses, allowing random access to any memory location. This makes it a suitable replacement for older read-only memory (ROM) chips, which are used to store program code that rarely needs to be updated, such as a computer’s BIOS or the firmware of set-top boxes. Its endurance may be from as little as 100 erase cycles for an on-chip flash memory, to a more typical 10,000 or 100,000 erase cycles, up to 1,000,000 erase cycles. NOR-based flash was the basis of early flash-based removable media; CompactFlash was originally based on it, though later cards moved to less expensive NAND flash.
Professionals should also look at how reliable a card is as you can’t take the risk of losing all your photos. This can be worked out by Mean Time Before Failure (MTBF). SanDisk claims a MTBF of over 1,000,000 hours for its memory cards – that’s almost 115 years before the average card is expected to fail.
Video Speed Class defines a set of requirements for UHS cards to match the modern MLC NAND flash memory and supports progressive 4K and 8K video with minimum sequential writing speeds of 6-90 MB/s. The graphical symbols use ‘V’ followed by a number designating write speed (V6, V10, V30, V60, and V90).
The microSD format was made by the company SanDisk. It was first called T-Flash, and then TransFlash, before being named microSD when it started to be used by the SD Card Association (SDA). Other flash card formats approved by the SDA include miniSD and standard SD card.

Under Unix-like operating systems such as Linux or FreeBSD, SD cards can be formatted using the UFS, Ext2, Ext3, Ext4, btrfs, HFS Plus, ReiserFS or F2FS file system. Additionally under Linux, HFS Plus file systems may be accessed for read/write if the “hfsplus” package is installed, and partitioned and formatted if “hfsprogs” is installed. To erase a NOR flash cell (resetting it to the “1” state), a large voltage of the opposite polarity is applied between the CG and source terminal, pulling the electrons off the FG through quantum tunneling. Modern NOR flash memory chips are divided into erase segments (often called blocks or sectors). The erase operation can be performed only on a block-wise basis; all the cells in an erase segment must be erased together. Programming of NOR cells, however, generally can be performed one byte or word at a time.

Prior to the Nintendo GameCube’s release, Nintendo focused resources on the launch of the Game Boy Advance, a handheld game console and successor to the original Game Boy and Game Boy Color. As a result, several games originally destined for the Nintendo 64 console were postponed in favor of becoming early releases on the GameCube. The last first-party game in 2001 for the Nintendo 64 was released in May, a month before the Game Boy Advance’s launch and six months before the GameCube’s, emphasizing the company’s shift in resources. Concurrently, Nintendo was developing software for the GameCube which would provision future connectivity between it and the Game Boy Advance. Certain games, such as The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, can use the handheld as a secondary screen and controller when connected to the console via a link cable.
Another limitation is that flash memory has a finite number of program – erase cycles (typically written as P/E cycles). Most commercially available flash products are guaranteed to withstand around 100,000 P/E cycles before the wear begins to deteriorate the integrity of the storage. Micron Technology and Sun Microsystems announced an SLC NAND flash memory chip rated for 1,000,000 P/E cycles on 17 December 2008.
Flash memory architecture includes a memory array stacked with a large number of flash cells. A basic flash memory cell consists of a storage transistor with a control gate and a floating gate, which is insulated from the rest of the transistor by a thin dielectric material or oxide layer. The floating gate stores the electrical charge and controls the flow of the electrical current.
