Dr. Fujio Masuoka is credited with the invention of flash memory when he worked for Toshiba in the 1980s. Masuoka’s colleague, Shoji Ariizumi, reportedly coined the term flash because the process of erasing all the data from a semiconductor chip reminded him of the flash of a camera.
Compared to NOR flash, replacing single transistors with serial-linked groups adds an extra level of addressing. Whereas NOR flash might address memory by page then word, NAND flash might address it by page, word and bit. Bit-level addressing suits bit-serial applications (such as hard disk emulation), which access only one bit at a time. Execute-in-place applications, on the other hand, require every bit in a word to be accessed simultaneously. This requires word-level addressing. In any case, both bit and word addressing modes are possible with either NOR or NAND flash.
The GameCube launched in Japan on September 14, 2001. Approximately 500,000 units were shipped in time to retailers. The console was scheduled to launch two months later in North America on November 5, 2001, but the date was pushed back in an effort to increase the number of available units. Japan received two additional games with internet capabilities, a cooperative RPG, Homeland and a baseball game with downloadable content, Jikkyō Powerful Pro Yakyū 10. Lastly, three racing games have LAN multiplayer modes: 1080° Avalanche, Kirby Air Ride, and Mario Kart: Double Dash!!. These three games can be forced over the internet with third-party PC software capable of tunneling the GameCube’s network traffic.

Speed Class*, UHS Speed Class** and Video Speed Class*** symbols with a number indicate minimum writing speed. You’ll need a memory card reader to transfer photos to your computer if you don’t fancy lugging around a USB cable for every one of your devices. You’ll be able to get a card reader for each of the above types of memory cards and some come with built in memory and can also function as a USB flash drive. But check the device you’re loading your photos to as some computers, printers and notebooks already come with built-in memory card slots. If you’re using more than one memory card regularly it will probably be worth investing in a multi-card reader, which accept multiple types of memory cards and brands. Some even take as many as 35-in-1.
Video speed classes are added to the faster SD card arsenal. For example, a UHS speed class of 3 is a V30 video speed class. Most often shown starting with the 90MB/sec and 60MB/sec cards, they allow additional features to make writing more even and assure consistent performance. Many older video game consoles used memory cards to hold saved game data. Cartridge-based systems primarily used battery-backed volatile RAM within each individual cartridge to hold saves for that game. UHS speed class is designed for SDHC and SDXC memory cards. These cards are a higher speed and utilize a different data bus that doesn’t work in non-UHS compatible devices. You’ll want one of these cards for Full HD recording and for taking continuous high-resolution photos, like burst shot mode used for sports photography. A higher speed UHS card, like a U3 can be used for recording video in 4K.
Faster, more sophisticated cameras and camcorders, such as DSLR and mirrorless cameras, action cams, and even high-end point-and-shoot cameras have more capabilities that require different features from a memory card. HD, 4K Ultra HD, slow motion and high-speed burst shots require a lot faster speed and greater capacity from a memory card. To properly store these files, you’ll need cards with a higher write speed to keep up (see Write Speed below for more information). A memory card with higher write speeds will help prevent camera lag, recording failures and other performance issues. Larger memory card capacity will provide ample space for high-resolution photos and video so you won’t run out of memory when it matters most.
In 2002, Nintendo introduced the WaveBird Wireless Controller, the first wireless gamepad developed by a first-party console manufacturer. The RF-based wireless controller is similar in design to the standard controller. It communicates with the GameCube by way of a wireless receiver dongle connected to one of the console’s controller ports. Powered by two AA batteries, which are housed in a compartment on the underside of the controller, the WaveBird lacks the vibration functionality of the standard controller. In addition to the standard inputs, the WaveBird features a channel selection dial – also found on the receiver – and an on/off switch. In September 2006, SanDisk announced the 4 GB miniSDHC. Like the SD and SDHC, the miniSDHC card has the same form factor as the older miniSD card but the HC card requires HC support built into the host device.
