While EPROMs had to be completely erased before being rewritten, NAND-type flash memory may be written and read in blocks (or pages) which are generally much smaller than the entire device. NOR-type flash allows a single machine word (byte) to be written – to an erased location – or read independently.
Over half the energy used by a 1.8 V NAND flash chip is lost in the charge pump itself. Since boost converters are inherently more efficient than charge pumps, researchers developing low-power SSDs have proposed returning to the dual Vcc/Vpp supply voltages used on all the early flash chips, driving the high Vpp voltage for all flash chips in a SSD with a single shared external boost converter.
CompactFlash (CF) cards offer very high storage capacities and fast processing times. They were first introduced by Sandisk in 1994 and were widely used, but now they are usually only found in the most advanced DSLRs. Last year Canon chose CompactFlash as the recording media for use in its new lineup of professional high definiton (HD) video cameras.
Many older video game consoles used memory cards to hold saved game data. Cartridge-based systems primarily used battery-backed volatile RAM within each individual cartridge to hold saves for that game. Cartridges without this RAM may have used a password system, or wouldn’t save progress at all. The Neo Geo AES, released in 1990 by SNK, was the first video game console able to use a memory card. Vertical NAND (V-NAND) memory stacks memory cells vertically and uses a charge trap flash architecture. The vertical layers allow larger areal bit densities without requiring smaller individual cells.

Cards that comply with UHS show Roman numerals ‘I’, ‘II’ or ‘III’ next to the SD card logo, and report this capability to the host device. Use of UHS-I requires that the host device command the card to drop from 3.3-volt to 1.8-volt operation over the I/O interface pins and select the four-bit transfer mode, while UHS-II requires 0.4-volt operation.

SD cards are not the most economical solution in devices that need only a small amount of non-volatile memory, such as station presets in small radios. Video Speed Class defines a set of requirements for UHS cards to match the modern MLC NAND flash memory and supports progressive 4K and 8K video with minimum sequential writing speeds of 6-90 MB/s. The graphical symbols use ‘V’ followed by a number designating write speed (V6, V10, V30, V60, and V90).
It is the smallest memory card that can be bought; at 15 mm × 11 mm × 1 mm (about the size of a fingernail), it is about a quarter of the size of a normal-sized SD card. There are adapters that make the small microSD able to fit in devices that have slots for standard SD, miniSD, Memory Stick Duo card, and even USB. But, not all of the different cards can work together. Many microSD cards are sold with a standard SD adapter, so that people can use them in devices that take standard SD but not microSD cards.

Memory cards offer a number of advantages over a hard disk drive (HDD): they are much smaller and lighter, extremely portable, silent, allow more immediate access and are less prone to mechanical damage. However, an HDD still offers a compelling advantage: Although flash prices are coming down, a typical memory card still costs more (and has a lower storage capacity) than a high-capacity HDD.
Common flash devices such as USB flash drives and memory cards provide only a block-level interface, or flash translation layer (FTL), which writes to a different cell each time to wear-level the device. This prevents incremental writing within a block; however, it does help the device from being prematurely worn out by intensive write patterns.
UHS-II uses an additional row of pins to transfer data faster than UHS-I. Because of that extra row of physical pins, you can use a UHS-II card with a UHS-I camera, and a UHS-I card with a UHS-II camera, but you won’t get UHS-II speeds unless both camera and card support it. Likewise, to get those transfer speeds from your SD card to your computer, both the card and card reader must support it. Only high-end cameras can take advantage of UHS-II SD cards right now, but we expect this to change. In February 2017, the SD Association also introduced UHS-III (PDF) to provide further support for 360-degree, 3D, 4K, and 8K media content, but we expect it will take a year or two before we see memory cards and devices that support the new interface.
