The capacity is measured in gigabytes(GB) and determines how much your card can hold. A higher capacity can help you if you’ll be taking photos on a trip and are unable to transfer them onto a computer, or if you will be taking high-definition photos to be used for print making.

A big bright blue indicator light makes life easier, lighting up when connected to your computer and flashing when accessed. We used it on a laptop with Windows 7 to access a 1 Gb micro SD card that…. wait for it…. had been horribly and evilly, and quite accidentally drowned in the washing machine (Mr. Mr. doesn’t know how to check his pants pockets when I’m screaming ‘Hurry up already!’… obviously all his fault!), and it worked flawlessly with the tiny drowned card! I have had the same problem with my Dell XPS L502x but the SD card reader will read the slow cards 4gb but when I put a 32 GB xtream it will not read so I have to use a USB card reader , I also have trouble now with the integrated web-cam this will not work through the Windows applications but have done a test online and it works, I have tried bios upgrades and there are no updates on the drives so like we all have been left high and dry !!
These are SD memory cards but with a higher capacity. Original SD cards only went up to 2GB, so SDHC was invented with a maximum capacity of 32GB. They are identical in shape and size, but they are different media types. Though your camera may fit a SDHC, be careful because if the camera was made before SDHC came along it may not recognise it.

A £5 SD card from a supermarket will give you the same results as using the latest generation of card from Lexar, SanDisk or Samsung. The difference, however, is that the cheaper card may do it much more slowly, be less reliable, have fewer backup measures, different components, and, in terms of memory card data recovery, may not be such a wise choice if things go wrong and your images go missing.

Read speed determines how fast data can be retrieved from the card. A faster read speed means you can more quickly transfer data from the card onto a computer or printer. Faster read speeds decrease your wait time so you can edit, save and share faster. For example, if you were shooting weddings, or doing work where you’d have to download a large amount of large raw image files to the computer, you’d want a higher read speed. However, read speed is really more of a convenience, whereas your primary focus should be write speed when you’re looking for a memory card.

The majority of new cameras, camcorders and other devices use Secure Digital (SD) or microSD memory cards. MicroSD is the smaller variant of the SD memory card and, because of its compact size, microSD is used in certain mobile devices as well.
Speaking more generally, CompactFlash (CF) cards on the market can have a speed rating of 150MB/sec (1000x) and will work for a large variety of cameras, while most standard SDHC cards currently tend to be around 20-30MB/sec (133-200x). While there are also a few super-fast UHS-II U3 SDHC cards available now with potential write speeds of 250MB/s, these are also not as widely available for use in all cameras and do start to get rather pricey.

The method used to read NAND flash memory can cause nearby cells in the same memory block to change over time (become programmed). This is known as read disturb. The threshold number of reads is generally in the hundreds of thousands of reads between intervening erase operations. If reading continually from one cell, that cell will not fail but rather one of the surrounding cells on a subsequent read. To avoid the read disturb problem the flash controller will typically count the total number of reads to a block since the last erase. When the count exceeds a target limit, the affected block is copied over to a new block, erased, then released to the block pool. The original block is as good as new after the erase. If the flash controller does not intervene in time, however, a read disturb error will occur with possible data loss if the errors are too numerous to correct with an error-correcting code.
I have done it and it works… Go into disk management (word of warning my issue might have been different from yours.). You should see your sd card reader. I fixed this by right clicking on the large box which corresponds to the sd card at the bottom of the window and I clicked “Change drive letter and paths” assign a letter and you should be fine if your issue is the same as mine.

Most modern microcontrollers have built-in SPI logic that can interface to an SD card operating in its SPI mode, providing non-volatile storage. Even if a microcontroller lacks the SPI feature, the feature can be emulated by bit banging. For example, a home-brew hack combines spare General Purpose Input/Output (GPIO) pins of the processor of the Linksys WRT54G router with MMC support code from the Linux kernel. This technique can achieve throughput of up to 1.6 Mbit/s.
I ordered the IOGEAR SD/MicroSD/MMC Card Reader/Writer GFR204SD and got it in the mail about three days after ordering [impressive]. As some other reviewers have noted, it does feel a little flimsy, and care should be taken to insert and remove it AS STRAIGHT AS YOU CAN from whatever device you use it in, especially when it’s a very tight fit into the USB port.
Write speed is how fast images can be saved onto a memory card. This is a critical need, especially if your camera takes high-resolution images, burst pictures or HD video. If you have a slower memory card, you may have to wait for the memory card to finish writing before you can take additional shots, which could cause you to miss the perfect photo. If your card is too slow to properly handle video, it may cause dropped frames, inferior quality, or stop recording altogether. So if you’re doing sports photography, or taking video, make sure to look for a higher write speed.
There are two major SPI flash types. The first type is characterized by small pages and one or more internal SRAM page buffers allowing a complete page to be read to the buffer, partially modified, and then written back (for example, the Atmel AT45 DataFlash or the Micron Technology Page Erase NOR Flash). The second type has larger sectors. The smallest sectors typically found in an SPI flash are 4 kB, but they can be as large as 64 kB. Since the SPI flash lacks an internal SRAM buffer, the complete page must be read out and modified before being written back, making it slow to manage. SPI flash is cheaper than DataFlash and is therefore a good choice when the application is code shadowing.
The Transcend USB 3.1 Type-C Multi-Card Reader is our previous runner-up pick. An essential for any GameCube owner. Excellent price, decent build (hard plastic, but it feels sturdy). 64 MB is plenty of storage (excessive, really), but it ensures that lack of memory will never be a problem you have to face.
