In flash memory, each memory cell resembles a standard MOSFET, except that the transistor has two gates instead of one. On top is the control gate (CG), as in other MOS transistors, but below this there is a floating gate (FG) insulated all around by an oxide layer. The FG is interposed between the CG and the MOSFET channel. Because the FG is electrically isolated by its insulating layer, electrons placed on it are trapped until they are removed by another application of electric field (e.g. Applied voltage or UV as in EPROM). Counter-intuitively, placing electrons on the FG sets the transistor to the logical “0” state. Once the FG is charged, the electrons in it screen (partially cancel) the electric field from the CG, thus, increasing the threshold voltage (VT1) of the cell. This means that now a higher voltage (VT2) must be applied to the CG to make the channel conductive. In order to read a value from the transistor, an intermediate voltage between the threshold voltages (VT1 & VT2) is applied to the CG. If the channel conducts at this intermediate voltage, the FG must be uncharged (if it was charged, we would not get conduction because the intermediate voltage is less than VT2), and hence, a logical “1” is stored in the gate. If the channel does not conduct at the intermediate voltage, it indicates that the FG is charged, and hence, a logical “0” is stored in the gate. The presence of a logical “0” or “1” is sensed by determining whether there is current flowing through the transistor when the intermediate voltage is asserted on the CG. In a multi-level cell device, which stores more than one bit per cell, the amount of current flow is sensed (rather than simply its presence or absence), in order to determine more precisely the level of charge on the FG.
It is unclear how long flash memory will persist under archival conditions – i.e., benign temperature and humidity with infrequent access with or without prophylactic rewrite. Anecdotal evidence[specify] suggests that the technology is reasonably robust on the scale of years. Datasheets of Atmel’s flash-based “ATmega” microcontrollers typically promise retention times of 20 years at 85 °C (185 °F) and 100 years at 25 °C (77 °F).
Cards often have a multiplication factor written on them which usually represents read speed (such as 133x, 200x, 300x, etc). This is called the ‘Commercial x rating’ with 1x being equivalent to the speed of the original CD-ROM of 150 KB/sec. This makes it easy to convert between the two by multiplying or dividing by 150. So, 200x will equate to 1 seconds to read a 29.5MB image file (200 x 150 = 30,000/1016 = 29.528).

I think it’s pretty cool you can use standard SD and Micro SD in it, but I opted to use my 16GB Micro SDHC from my old phone because standard SD sticks WAY out (be sure to insert the Micro SD upside down). The Micro SD still sticks out from the side of the reader about 1/4″, and I’m curious to know why they couldn’t have designed the reader to accept Micro SD from the rear of it so you won’t accidentally tug on it when inserting/removing the reader.

On March 6, 2009, Pretec introduced the first SDXC card, a 32 GB card with a read/write speed of 400 Mbit/s. But only early in 2010 did compatible host devices come onto the market, including Sony’s Handycam HDR-CX55V camcorder, Canon’s EOS 550D (also known as Rebel T2i) Digital SLR camera, a USB card reader from Panasonic, and an integrated SDXC card reader from JMicron. The earliest laptops to integrate SDXC card readers relied on a USB 2.0 bus, which does not have the bandwidth to support SDXC at full speed.

At the time of April 2009, the same 4 GB card could be bought for as low as $12 (USD) at department stores, and by May 2009, for as low as $6 (USD) at online electronics stores. In January 2010, a 16 GB micro SD card class 2 cost about $40 (USD), and a 4 GB class 2 micro SD card about $8 (USD).
Latest versions of major operating systems, including Windows Mobile and Android Marshmallow, allow applications to run from microSD cards creating possibilities for new usage models for SD cards in mobile computing markets.
Two major flash device manufacturers, Toshiba and Samsung, have chosen to use an interface of their own design known as Toggle Mode (and now Toggle V2.0). This interface isn’t pin-to-pin compatible with the ONFI specification. The result is a product designed for one vendor’s devices may not be able to use another vendor’s devices.

While larger is better, you need to make sure your device can use the larger card. The SD/SDHC/SDXC classification isn’t just for cards, but for devices as well. Older digital cameras can only read SD cards, making SDHC cards useless. Similarly, cameras that aren’t SDXC-compatible won’t accept 64GB cards. Most current devices are SDHC compatible, but double-check your older devices before getting SDHC cards, and check the specs on your newer gear before getting SDXC cards.
The SDIO family comprises Low-Speed and Full-Speed cards. Both types of SDIO cards support SPI and one-bit SD bus types. Low-Speed SDIO cards are allowed to also support the four-bit SD bus; Full-Speed SDIO cards are required to support the four-bit SD bus. To use an SDIO card as a “combo card” (for both memory and I/O), the host device must first select four-bit SD bus operation. Two other unique features of Low-Speed SDIO are a maximum clock rate of 400 kHz for all communications, and the use of Pin 8 as “interrupt” to try to initiate dialogue with the host device.
The low-level interface to flash memory chips differs from those of other memory types such as DRAM, ROM, and EEPROM, which support bit-alterability (both zero to one and one to zero) and random access via externally accessible address buses.

In hindsight, the heating issues were probably a major warning sign. After 6 months, I plugged in my reader – and it died. Rather, it didn’t respond at all – no lights or anything, even with a SD card inside! I tested it on multiple computers and operating systems to eliminate the possibility of computer issues or driver problems – no issues. (On Linux, I checked to see if the kernel even saw it – nothing showed up at all, not even a USB error! It’s as if I plugged nothing in…)

Write amplification: The flash controller may need to overwrite more data than requested. This has to do with performing read-modify-write operations on write blocks, freeing up (the much larger) erase blocks, while moving data around to achieve wear leveling.

You’ll find an indication of a memory card’s read or write speed from the various cryptic markings on it. But before you get out your school algebra book and attempt some mathematical calculations, remember read speed is faster than write speed.

xD cards are simply 18-pin NAND flash chips in a special package and support the standard command set for raw NAND flash access. Although the raw hardware interface to xD cards is well understood, the layout of its memory contents—necessary for interoperability with xD card readers and digital cameras—is totally undocumented. The consortium that licenses xD cards has not released any technical information to the public.

USB drive: This portable plug-and-play flash storage device is inserted into a computer’s standard USB port. USB drives ushered in the demise of floppy disks and, to some extent, the reduced use of compact discs.
SDHC card: This card has the same form factor as an SD card, with specifications that define SDHC card capacities from 4 GB to 32 GB. These devices were developed to tackle high-definition video and high-resolution images. Although SD cards will work in an SDHC device, an SDHC card will not function in an SD card-based digital camera or card reader.
Many older video game consoles used memory cards to hold saved game data. Cartridge-based systems primarily used battery-backed volatile RAM within each individual cartridge to hold saves for that game. Many ASICs are pad-limited, meaning that the size of the die is constrained by the number of wire bond pads, rather than the complexity and number of gates used for the device logic. If you’re just starting out or just do photography as a part-time hobby then, generally speaking, the most important feature to look for when buying a card is the capacity. Most memory card manufacturers publish tables on their websites to show how many images you can save on the specific card. Different file types, compression and resolution all affect the size of each file, so the number of images you can put on one card from one camera to the next is never the same.
