UHS-I and UHS-II cards can use UHS Speed Class rating with two possible grades: class 1 for minimum read/write performance of at least 10 MB/s (‘U1’ symbol featuring number 1 inside ‘U’) and class 3 for minimum write performance of 30 MB/s (‘U3’ symbol featuring 3 inside ‘U’), targeted at recording 4K video. Before November 2013, the rating was branded UHS Speed Grade and contained grades 0 (no symbol) and 1 (‘U1’ symbol). Manufacturers can also display standard speed class symbols (C2, C4, C6, and C10) alongside, or in place of UHS speed class.

One more recent application for flash memory is as a replacement for hard disks. Flash memory does not have the mechanical limitations and latencies of hard drives, so a solid-state drive (SSD) is attractive when considering speed, noise, power consumption, and reliability. Flash drives are gaining traction as mobile device secondary storage devices; they are also used as substitutes for hard drives in high-performance desktop computers and some servers with RAID and SAN architectures.

Windows Vista (SP1) and later and OS X (10.6.5 and later) support exFAT out of the box. (Windows XP and Server 2003 can support exFAT via an optional update from Microsoft.) The Kingston had read and write speeds of 159 MB/s and 127 MB/s, respectively, during our SD card test. In our microSD card test, it had expected read and write speeds of 83 MB/s and 69 MB/s. It was a bit slower when reading and writing to a CF card, with speeds of 127 MB/s and 107 MB/s.
Although the packaging was different than what was shown in the picture, I got what I expected: A Gamecube memory card. 64 Megabytes is plenty for any persons use. My old cards were missing and most likely broken, and I wanted to re-live some old memories. This card has more than enough space to store some of my old favorites. It gets the job done, and it was cheap, but I have experienced a few problems. Sometimes the Gamecube says that the memory card isn’t placed in Slot A, despite having the memory card securely in Slot A for weeks and not even touching it. This happens rarely, but because I have been playing the Gamecube so much, it is quite annoying when I have to blow inside the card and keep plugging it back into the Gamecube, hitting “Try Again” when it says there’s nothing in Slot A, then eventually turning the system off and on and hoping that it will work. Every time, it will eventually work. I just hope that it will keep working. Anyway, it is what it is. Its a cheap Gamecube Memory Card, and it does its job.

In 2005, Toshiba and SanDisk developed a NAND flash chip capable of storing 1 GB of data using multi-level cell (MLC) technology, capable of storing two bits of data per cell. In September 2005, Samsung Electronics announced that it had developed the world’s first 2 GB chip.
On the top of the controller are two “pressure-sensitive” trigger buttons marked “L” and “R”. Each essentially provides two functions: one analog and one digital. As the trigger is depressed, it emits an analog signal which increases the more it is pressed in. I think it’s pretty cool you can use standard SD and Micro SD in it, but I opted to use my 16GB Micro SDHC from my old phone because standard SD sticks WAY out (be sure to insert the Micro SD upside down). The Micro SD still sticks out from the side of the reader about 1/4″, and I’m curious to know why they couldn’t have designed the reader to accept Micro SD from the rear of it so you won’t accidentally tug on it when inserting/removing the reader.

Most NAND devices are shipped from the factory with some bad blocks. These are typically marked according to a specified bad block marking strategy. The method used to read NAND flash memory can cause nearby cells in the same memory block to change over time (become programmed). This is known as read disturb. The threshold number of reads is generally in the hundreds of thousands of reads between intervening erase operations. If reading continually from one cell, that cell will not fail but rather one of the surrounding cells on a subsequent read. To avoid the read disturb problem the flash controller will typically count the total number of reads to a block since the last erase. When the count exceeds a target limit, the affected block is copied over to a new block, erased, then released to the block pool. The original block is as good as new after the erase. If the flash controller does not intervene in time, however, a read disturb error will occur with possible data loss if the errors are too numerous to correct with an error-correcting code.
NOR and NAND flash memory differ in architecture and design characteristics. NOR flash uses no shared components and can connect individual memory cells in parallel, enabling random access to data. A NAND flash cell is more compact and has fewer bit lines, stringing together floating gate transistors to increase storage density.
