The nonvolatile memory express (NVMe) protocol is a specification that permits an SSD to exploit the PCIe bus. NVMe operates at the host controller to define the command set and feature set needed to streamline the I/O stack. The aim is to enable PCIe-based SSDs to deliver low latency, higher throughput, and to consume less power when compared to SAS or SATA SSDs.
Flash memory stores information in an array of memory cells made from floating-gate transistors. In single-level cell (SLC) devices, each cell stores only one bit of information. Multi-level cell (MLC) devices, including triple-level cell (TLC) devices, can store more than one bit per cell.
Cards often have a multiplication factor written on them which usually represents read speed (such as 133x, 200x, 300x, etc). This is called the ‘Commercial x rating’ with 1x being equivalent to the speed of the original CD-ROM of 150 KB/sec. This makes it easy to convert between the two by multiplying or dividing by 150. So, 200x will equate to 1 seconds to read a 29.5MB image file (200 x 150 = 30,000/1016 = 29.528).
PCIe-based SSDs are designed around Peripheral Component Interconnect Express, a high-speed expansion card format that connects a computer with its attached peripherals. PCIe has a point-to-point architecture, allowing each device to connect to a host via its own serial link, rather than by sharing a network bus. By virtue of this direct connection, PCIe SSDs are generally rated to deliver higher performance than server-based Serial Advance Technology Attachment (SATA), Serial-Attached SCSI (SAS) or Fibre Channel (FC) SSDs.

The quality of this card is relative to how you plan on using it. I bought it last year to use in my point and shoot digital camera (12MP) while on vacation and it worked perfectly. No, a year later, I’ve bought a DSLR and found it just wasn’t up to snuff. My DSLR (26MP) creates files of too large a size for this card to quickly save. Want to take one picture? In hindsight, the heating issues were probably a major warning sign. After 6 months, I plugged in my reader – and it died. Rather, it didn’t respond at all – no lights or anything, even with a SD card inside! I tested it on multiple computers and operating systems to eliminate the possibility of computer issues or driver problems – no issues. (On Linux, I checked to see if the kernel even saw it – nothing showed up at all, not even a USB error! It’s as if I plugged nothing in…)
Read speed determines how fast data can be retrieved from the card. A faster read speed means you can more quickly transfer data from the card onto a computer or printer. Faster read speeds decrease your wait time so you can edit, save and share faster. For example, if you were shooting weddings, or doing work where you’d have to download a large amount of large raw image files to the computer, you’d want a higher read speed. However, read speed is really more of a convenience, whereas your primary focus should be write speed when you’re looking for a memory card.
File fragmentation: where there is not sufficient space for a file to be recorded in a contiguous region, it is split into non-contiguous fragments. This does not cause rotational or head-movement delays as with electromechanical hard drives, but may decrease speed; for instance, by requiring additional reads and computation to determine where on the card the file’s next fragment is stored.

The method used to read NAND flash memory can cause nearby cells in the same memory block to change over time (become programmed). This is known as read disturb. The threshold number of reads is generally in the hundreds of thousands of reads between intervening erase operations. If reading continually from one cell, that cell will not fail but rather one of the surrounding cells on a subsequent read. To avoid the read disturb problem the flash controller will typically count the total number of reads to a block since the last erase. When the count exceeds a target limit, the affected block is copied over to a new block, erased, then released to the block pool. The original block is as good as new after the erase. If the flash controller does not intervene in time, however, a read disturb error will occur with possible data loss if the errors are too numerous to correct with an error-correcting code.[30][31][32]

A fairer and more recent system is the ‘class rating’. The SD Association created the speed class rating test which focuses on finding the absolute minimum data transfer rate of SD/SDHC/SDXC cards, as opposed to a sustainable rate.
A host device can ask any inserted SD card for its 128-bit identification string (the Card-Specific Data or CSD). In standard-capacity cards (SDSC), 12 bits identify the number of memory clusters (ranging from 1 to 4,096) and 3 bits identify the number of blocks per cluster (which decode to 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, or 512 blocks per cluster). The host device multiplies these figures (as shown in the following section) with the number of bytes per block to determine the card’s capacity in bytes.[citation needed]
In addition to flash memory arrays, the ability to insert SSDs in x86-based servers has increased the technology’s popularity. This arrangement is known as server-side flash memory and it enables companies to sidestep the vendor lock-in associated with purchasing expensive and integrated flash storage arrays.
Serial flash is a small, low-power flash memory that provides only serial access to the data – rather than addressing individual bytes, the user reads or writes large contiguous groups of bytes in the address space serially. Serial Peripheral Interface Bus (SPI) is a typical protocol for accessing the device. When incorporated into an embedded system, serial flash requires fewer wires on the PCB than parallel flash memories, since it transmits and receives data one bit at a time. This may permit a reduction in board space, power consumption, and total system cost.
Memory cells in different vertical layers do not interfere with each other, as the charges cannot move vertically through the silicon nitride storage medium, and the electric fields associated with the gates are closely confined within each layer. The vertical collection is electrically identical to the serial-linked groups in which conventional NAND flash memory is configured.[24]
I have done it and it works… Go into disk management (word of warning my issue might have been different from yours.). You should see your sd card reader. I fixed this by right clicking on the large box which corresponds to the sd card at the bottom of the window and I clicked “Change drive letter and paths” assign a letter and you should be fine if your issue is the same as mine.

Each NOR flash cell is larger than a NAND flash cell – 10 F2 vs 4 F2 – even when using exactly the same semiconductor device fabrication and so each transistor, contact, etc. is exactly the same size – because NOR flash cells require a separate metal contact for each cell.[49]
