Not sure what the difference is between a £50 Class 2 SD and a £450 Class 10 SDHC memory card? We’ve split them up into their categories and broken down the speed jargon by translating it into real speed ratings so you can decide if a certain memory card is worth the extra money.
Secure Digital includes four card families available in three different sizes. The four families are the original Standard-Capacity (SDSC), the High-Capacity (SDHC), the eXtended-Capacity (SDXC), and the SDIO, which combines input/output functions with data storage. The three form factors are the original size, the mini size, and the micro size. Electrically passive adapters allow a smaller card to fit and function in a device built for a larger card. The SD card’s small footprint is an ideal storage medium for smaller, thinner and more portable electronic devices.
The NAND type operates primarily in memory cards, USB flash drives, solid-state drives (those produced in 2009 or later), and similar products, for general storage and transfer of data. NAND or NOR flash memory is also often used to store configuration data in numerous digital products, a task previously made possible by EEPROM or battery-powered static RAM. One key disadvantage of flash memory is that it can only endure a relatively small number of write cycles in a specific block.
To read data, first the desired group is selected (in the same way that a single transistor is selected from a NOR array). Next, most of the word lines are pulled up above the VT of a programmed bit, while one of them is pulled up to just over the VT of an erased bit. The series group will conduct (and pull the bit line low) if the selected bit has not been programmed.
The majority of new cameras, camcorders and other devices use Secure Digital (SD) or microSD memory cards. MicroSD is the smaller variant of the SD memory card and, because of its compact size, microSD is used in certain mobile devices as well.
The guaranteed cycle count may apply only to block zero (as is the case with TSOP NAND devices), or to all blocks (as in NOR). This effect is mitigated in some chip firmware or file system drivers by counting the writes and dynamically remapping blocks in order to spread write operations between sectors; this technique is called wear leveling. Another approach is to perform write verification and remapping to spare sectors in case of write failure, a technique called bad block management (BBM). For portable consumer devices, these wearout management techniques typically extend the life of the flash memory beyond the life of the device itself, and some data loss may be acceptable in these applications. For high reliability data storage, however, it is not advisable to use flash memory that would have to go through a large number of programming cycles. This limitation is meaningless for ‘read-only’ applications such as thin clients and routers, which are programmed only once or at most a few times during their lifetimes.
I want to get this review published ASAP to save others looking for SD and SDHC cards some time. So, I am going to focus on #2 above and edit the review for points 1,3, and 4 above after I use the card in the other devices.
The standard SD card is the largest and has been in use the longest, measuring 32 by 24 by 2.1 mm (HWD), weighing 2 grams, and showing the signature cut-corner profile SD cards are known for. Most digital cameras you can buy today use standard-size SD cards. Even though they’re the largest SD card, they’re still very small, and are dwarfed by the CompactFlash cards used by professional photographers in high-end digital cameras, like the $5,000 Canon 1D Mark IV. However, the cards can get even smaller.
Video Speed Class is defined to answer a demand for high resolution and high quality 4K8K video recording and it also has an important feature to support next generation flash memory such as 3D NAND. Furthermore, as it covers speed of HD(2K) video, it is possible to integrate into Video Speed Class from now on.
A host device can ask any inserted SD card for its 128-bit identification string (the Card-Specific Data or CSD). In standard-capacity cards (SDSC), 12 bits identify the number of memory clusters (ranging from 1 to 4,096) and 3 bits identify the number of blocks per cluster (which decode to 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, or 512 blocks per cluster). The host device multiplies these figures (as shown in the following section) with the number of bytes per block to determine the card’s capacity in bytes.
Secure Digital cards are used in many consumer electronic devices, and have become a widespread means of storing several gigabytes of data in a small size. Devices in which the user may remove and replace cards often, such as digital cameras, camcorders, and video game consoles, tend to use full-sized cards. Devices in which small size is paramount, such as mobile phones, tend to use microSD cards.
Nevertheless, in order to be fully compliant with the SDXC card specification, many SDXC-capable host devices are firmware-programmed to expect exFAT on cards larger than 32 GB. Consequently, they may not accept SDXC cards reformatted as FAT32, even if the device supports FAT32 on smaller cards (for SDHC compatibility). Therefore, even if a file system is supported in general, it is not always possible to use alternative file systems on SDXC cards at all depending on how strictly the SDXC card specification has been implemented in the host device. This bears a risk of accidental loss of data, as a host device may treat a card with an unrecognized file system as blank or damaged and reformat the card.
NOR flash is more expensive to produce than NAND flash and tends to be used primarily in consumer and embedded devices for boot purposes and read-only applications for code storage. NAND flash is more suitable for data storage in consumer devices and enterprise server and storage systems due to its lower cost per bit to store data, greater density, and higher programming and erase (P/E) speeds.
In 2001, SD card is mainly for digital cameras, mobile phones, laptops and game consoles from the beginning of development to popular. These memory cards are combined in a small size (32 x 24 x 2.1 mm) and good strength and have become a practical tool for storing different types of data, (from photos and videos to files and applications) in recent years.
MiniSD cards, the least frequently used format these days, measure 21.5 by 20 by 1.4 mm (HWD) and weigh just a gram, making them just over a third the volume and taking up just over half the area of a full-size SD card. Instead of cut corners, miniSD cards have a tapered corner to help you orient the card when putting it in a slot. This design aspect follows with the smallest of the SD cards, the microSD card.

There are two major SPI flash types. The first type is characterized by small pages and one or more internal SRAM page buffers allowing a complete page to be read to the buffer, partially modified, and then written back (for example, the Atmel AT45 DataFlash or the Micron Technology Page Erase NOR Flash). The second type has larger sectors. The smallest sectors typically found in an SPI flash are 4 kB, but they can be as large as 64 kB. Since the SPI flash lacks an internal SRAM buffer, the complete page must be read out and modified before being written back, making it slow to manage. SPI flash is cheaper than DataFlash and is therefore a good choice when the application is code shadowing.
The specific commands used to lock, unlock, program, or erase NOR memories differ for each manufacturer. To avoid needing unique driver software for every device made, special Common Flash Memory Interface (CFI) commands allow the device to identify itself and its critical operating parameters.
The write speed describes how fast images can be saved onto a card, which is important when shooting bursts of images in continuous shooting mode, HD video or when using high resolution cameras that shoot particularly large files.

Many of Nintendo’s own first-party games, such as Super Smash Bros. Melee and Mario Kart: Double Dash‼, saw strong sales, though this did not typically benefit third-party developers or directly drive sales of their games. Many cross-platform games — such as sports franchises released by Electronic Arts — were sold in numbers far below their PlayStation 2 and Xbox counterparts, eventually prompting some developers to scale back or completely cease support for the GameCube. Exceptions include Sega’s family friendly Sonic Adventure 2 and Super Monkey Ball, which reportedly yielded more sales on GameCube than most of the company’s games on the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. After several years of losing money from developing for Nintendo’s console, Eidos Interactive announced in September 2003 that it would end support for the GameCube, canceling several games that were in development. Later, however, Eidos resumed development of GameCube games, releasing hit games such as Lego Star Wars: The Video Game and Tomb Raider: Legend. In addition, several third-party games originally intended to be GameCube exclusives – most notably Resident Evil 4 – were eventually ported to other systems in an attempt to maximize profits following lackluster sales of the original GameCube versions.
When executing software from NAND memories, virtual memory strategies are often used: memory contents must first be paged or copied into memory-mapped RAM and executed there (leading to the common combination of NAND + RAM). A memory management unit (MMU) in the system is helpful, but this can also be accomplished with overlays. For this reason, some systems will use a combination of NOR and NAND memories, where a smaller NOR memory is used as software ROM and a larger NAND memory is partitioned with a file system for use as a non-volatile data storage area.
A new generation of memory card formats, including RS-MMC, miniSD and microSD, feature extremely small form factors. For example, the microSD card has an area of just over 1.5 cm2, with a thickness of less than 1 mm. As of August 2017 microSD cards with capacity up to 400GB are available.

This one is very simple. SD cards offer different storage capacities, and that amount of space determines the card’s size classification. Odds are the microSD card in your smartphone isn’t a microSD card. It’s a microSDHC card, or Micro Secure Digital High Capacity. “Standard” SD cards max out at 2GB capacity, based on their classification and the controller used by SD-only devices. Most SD cards you’ll find today are technically SDHC, with capacities between 4GB and 32GB. The largest class is SDXC, or Secure Digital Extended Capacity, can range from 64GB to 2TB. (Currently, no cards actually get anywhere near 2TB; the largest capacity available is 128GB.)
Once you know what formats you can pick from, you’ll want to think about what you’ll be using your device to do. Different tasks require varying amounts of card capacity and write speed (both explained below):
I’m sure you could still find a new GameCube at your local electronics or gaming store. Try EBgames, GameStop, or even a BestBuy. New ones should run you $99 or less, but a used one could be as cheap as $50. If you have the money though, you might want to just invest in a Wii since it’s backwards compatible anyways.

I transferred a Nikon D800 RAW file, which are huge 36 megapixel files, in about 2 seconds on the iPad and roughly 5 seconds on the iPhone. If you’re working with RAW files, make sure your camera model is supported by iOS. Once the files are transferred to your Photos app, you will still need an app to convert the RAW files to file types compatible with the photo editor apps you use. Most will convert to JPG at this time. I’m using the piRAWnha app but there are others. A smartSD memory card is a microSD card with an internal “secure element” that allows the transfer of ISO 7816 Application Protocol Data Unit commands to, for example, JavaCard applets running on the internal secure element through the SD bus.
A memory card, flash card or memory cartridge is an electronic flash memory data storage device used for storing digital information. These are commonly used in portable electronic devices, such as digital cameras, mobile phones, laptop computers, tablets, PDAs, portable media players, video game consoles, synthesizers, electronic keyboards, and digital pianos.
It is the smallest memory card that can be bought; at 15 mm × 11 mm × 1 mm (about the size of a fingernail), it is about a quarter of the size of a normal-sized SD card. There are adapters that make the small microSD able to fit in devices that have slots for standard SD, miniSD, Memory Stick Duo card, and even USB. But, not all of the different cards can work together. Many microSD cards are sold with a standard SD adapter, so that people can use them in devices that take standard SD but not microSD cards.
These are SD cards but with a much higher capacity and faster processing speeds. These have a maximum capacity of 2TB (Terabytes). Similar to SDHC, in that an SDXC fits in a normal SD slot – but your camera may not be able to recognise this newer technology, so always check in advance. Computers also need to be able to read the exFAT filesystem to be compatible with SDXC. Currently Linux, Windows 7, Mac OSX (Snow Leopard) and some earlier versions of Microsoft Windows are compatible.

Some consumer-grade flash memory cards are used by companies to cache reads and writes with hybrid flash storage. Enterprise MLC is an MLC NAND variant with enhanced write cycles compared to consumer-grade MLC. Some newer enterprise SSDs use triple-level cell NAND flash, which stores three data bits per each flash cell. SSDs made with 3D NAND represent the next evolution. IBM, Samsung and Toshiba produce and market SSDs with 3D NAND, in which flash memory cells are stacked atop one another in vertical layers.
Worked fine for about 90 days then started showing “reading card” on start ups and suddenly NOTHING. From other reviews it appears to be a common problem with Samsung Galaxy phones. I have a S3 and Note II and the card no longer works on either. If you have the same combo and are coming up on 90 days, backup everything frequently and wait for “Sudden Death”, other than that its a great value IF SanDisk PAYS YOU to use it. To be fair perhaps Samsung is part of the problem – but so far no one appears to be part of a solution.
