SDHC cards are physically and electrically identical to standard-capacity SD cards (SDSC). The major compatibility issues between SDHC and SDSC cards are the redefinition of the Card-Specific Data (CSD) register in version 2.0 (see below), and the fact that SDHC cards are shipped preformatted with the FAT32 file system.
I think it’s pretty cool you can use standard SD and Micro SD in it, but I opted to use my 16GB Micro SDHC from my old phone because standard SD sticks WAY out (be sure to insert the Micro SD upside down). The Micro SD still sticks out from the side of the reader about 1/4″, and I’m curious to know why they couldn’t have designed the reader to accept Micro SD from the rear of it so you won’t accidentally tug on it when inserting/removing the reader.

One limitation of flash memory is that, although it can be read or programmed a byte or a word at a time in a random access fashion, it can be erased only a block at a time. This generally sets all bits in the block to 1. Starting with a freshly erased block, any location within that block can be programmed. NAND was developed by Toshiba a year after NOR was produced. It is faster, has a lower cost per bit, requires less chip area per cell and has added resilience. The shelf life of a NAND gate is approximately 100,000 write/erase cycles. In NOR gate flash every cell has an end connected to a bit line and the other end connected to a ground. If a word line is “high” then the transistor proceeds to lower the output bit line.
Unlike our other picks, the IOGear lacks an indicator light, so you can’t see when your card is connected or a transfer is underway at a glance. The main disadvantages of flash memory are the wear-out mechanism and cell-to-cell interference as the dies get smaller. Bits can fail with excessively high numbers of program/erase cycles, which eventually break down the oxide layer that traps electrons. The deterioration can distort the manufacturer-set threshold value at which a charge is determined to be a zero or a one. Electrons may escape and get stuck in the oxide insulation layer, leading to errors and bit rot.

Under Unix-like operating systems such as Linux or FreeBSD, SD cards can be formatted using the UFS, Ext2, Ext3, Ext4, btrfs, HFS Plus, ReiserFS or F2FS file system. Additionally under Linux, HFS Plus file systems may be accessed for read/write if the “hfsplus” package is installed, and partitioned and formatted if “hfsprogs” is installed. Although SD cards will work in an SDHC device, an SDHC card will not function in an SD card-based digital camera or card reader.
